Subject: George Becker Pipes

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your work on the digest. It is a real treat to see it in the in
basket once a month.

I have written before on the lack of a good tobacco shop in my area.
I am pleased to report to those living in central Iowa that the Tinder
Box in Valley West Mall in Des Moines is under new management! The
new manager is very knowledgable and service orientated. I have been
in the shop a couple of times and I am impressed with the people
working there and their helpfulness. A nice change indeed. Now it is
time to save up some $$ for my next pipe purchase. They deserve a
chance at my business again.

I would like to thank those who responded to me about sweetening my
pipes. I did the alchohol and salt method. It did wonders!! I can
now really enjoy my Savinelli Autogragh. It's my wife's favorite
pipe(she doesn't smoke, she picked it out for me). So she enjoys
seeing me use it.

A new question. I spent a couple of years in Kansas City. I was a
poor tech school student at the time and couldn't afford much more
than one pipe. I spent quite a few hours in Diebels on the Plaza.
What a great shop! A few years ago I sold one of my favorite
posessions (My Goldwing) so I treated myself to a visit to Diebels.
The shop used to have their own pipe carver. I had see some of his
work and I had alway wanted a pipe made him. His name is George
Becker. That day I did pick up one of this creations. It is a large
briar piece with in-laid elk horn on the sides of the bowl. Do any
subscribers have any pipes or information about Mr. Becker? When I
bought the pipe he had not been carving(for Diebels) for some time.
It would be nice to have some history on his work.

Thank you,
Wayne Baker
