Steve,

After living in Batesville AR for 7 years, my family moved to Kansas
City and I found a pipe club to join! I was perusing the latest "Pipes
and Tobaccos" and ran across the announce for the Greater KC Pipe Club
Swap/Sell Pipe Show as well as a listing for the meetings. I emailed
Dale Adkins and went to my first meeting at Cigar & Tobak. It was great
fun sitting around and puffing on a pipe with lots of others sitting
around puffing on pipes.

At the meeting we talked about the upcoming show - 2 days, Saturday, 7
November 1998 from 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday, 8 November 1998 form 9 am
to 3 pm. There will be door prizes, raffles, a pipe smoking contest and
other neat stuff. It is being held at the American Inn (800.905.6343),
rooms are $59 per night. Tables are $70 for the 2 days. More detailed
information can be had by emailing Dale Adkins (???????????????????),
calling Mark Wilson at 816.525.1127 or emailing me - I can always find
out more stuff.
Oh - back to meeting - there was a chance to try the new Frog Morton on
the Town tobacco and I must say it is very nice! I never actually cared
fot he original all that much, but I like the new stuff - it is more,
well I guess mellow is the best word. I even bought a tin. The owner
(I'm sorry but I don't want to put the wrong name in here as I met lots
of people and am very bad with names) of Cigar & Tobak gave a talk on
pipe care and how a really badly abused pipe (the sample was Dr Grabow
that had been smoked and smoked and smoked and never cleaned) can be
given a second lease on life as well as some general pipe care pointers.
We also got to smoke Frog Morton on the Town (did I mention that?) and
make really bad jokes.

Cigar & Tobak is very nice store with huge walk in cigar place - not
being much of a cigar person I did not go in. My eyes (and the rest of
me) were drawn by magic to the case of pipes. The Former pipes & Spanu
pipes are well, I was tempted to buy one, but i knew that if I did Holly
would disown me at the very least. But, well, I am doing to save my
pennies (lots and lots of pennies will be needed) and I will own one of
each before too long. They were, well, just come to the store and see -
which reminds me anyone in the KC area ought to come join us and check
out the pipes. We meet the 3rd Thursday at 8 pm until whenever - I
finally managed to drag myself out at 1030 amd was not the last to
leave. The store is at 103 Metcalf Center in Overland Park.

Now back to the pipes. I saw and held a Spanu that was covered in
cork! Real cork, not cork like wine bottle corks. It was very light
and balanced. There were Charatans, Comoys, Dunhills, Ferndowns, Ser
Jecapos, and Radices. Lots of very nice pipes. Lots of pipes that would
look very nice in my racks. I will have to go back soon and sit at the
table and smoke and convince myself that it really is OK to buy a new
pipe.

Oh dear, I'm rambling.

Thanks for the space.

Mark

OS/2 Warp - we have been where you want to go for some time.
I'll wait and puff on my pipe until you catch up - no hurry.

???????????????

[Thanks for the mail; I've taken the liberty of listing the Greater KC
Pipe Club in the Guide, with Messrs. Adkins and Wilson, and yourself,
as contacts. I still don't know what's happened with your mail; it
doesn't really make sense to me technically that you should be having
it, when no one else seems to be! If anyone else has problems mailing
to me at pipes.org, please let me know. -S.]
