From: "John Martin" <????????????????????> Subject: Sci Fi Churchwardens and a Christmas Meerschaum [PIPES] Christmas Greetings, o Brothers of the Bright Leaf!!! I was watching the director's cut of "Blade Runner", a bit of science fiction film noir, during the Christmas break and was suprised by the number of clay pipes that popped up in various scenes. There was a vase full of clays in the scene where two replicants suprise an elderly eye designer in his cryogenic chamber, and another scene where an elderly oriental smokes a shorter clay but my favorite scene is in an exotic nightclub where they show at least a dozen men & women smoking churchwardens at the bar. I understand that smoke was a traditional element of film noir, and that clays might add a nice retro touch, but still I am pleasantly surprised. Has anyone else seen clays pop up in interesting places??? I had a pretty decent Christmas pipewise. I was ready to pay over $100 to replace one of my favorite briars, a large bore thick walled pot with something that had a bore that was at least as large, 23.5mm. I was shocked to see the pipe's twin sitting in the seconds basket for a mere $30.00. This left me with enough extra cash to purchase a small slightly bent meerschaum lattice with an acrylic mouthpiece. This is my first experience with meerschaum and I am suprised at how dry the smoke is, in fact I have to sip water while I smoke to prevent my mouth from drying. It is a bit odd, but enjoyable once I had gotten used to it. I hope that all of you had a merry holiday season, with fine pipes & dry cool smokes. John E.
