[ILLNESS] Craig Tarler of Cornell and Diehl is recovering from a
triple bypass that he underwent mid-month. He seems to be doing well;
reports are that he converted the surgeon to pipe smoking on the way
to the operating room. But he probably could still use a little peace
and quiet; I know Patty could! So please don't nag him about any late
Cross-eyed Cricket shipments. (OTOH, where the heck is that Flower of
the Steppes? :-)

Hey Steve,
Just wanted to drop a line to tell you thanks for sending out
such a quality and informative periodical for us folks who
are truly "Brothers of the Briar"......
Currently I'm the NAPS (Nashville Association of Pipes Smokers)
President and have a charter membership of about 85 faithful
pipes smokers. Monthly we convene on the Second Tuesday
of each Month at The Sherlock Holmes Pub @ 6:30 where we
indulge in our favorite stein of Guinness or whatever salivates
your palette. After ordering we then pack our favorite pipe
with whatever blend either brought to the table by oneself
or presented by some of the numerous Pipe & Tobacco Stores
in town.
I've been smoking a pipe for about 8 years and can remember
the day I started not knowing a thing about it. My Grandfather
and Father both smoked a pipe and to this day have never asked
them a single question on the "how to's" of Pipe Smoking.
One reference that helped me tremendously through the early years
was Carl Hackers Ultimate Pipe Smoking Book. To this day I still pick
it up and re-read chapters that in the beginning may not have made
as much sense as they do now. I highly recommend this book for
beginning Pipe Smokers, a good reference and starting point.
Over the years I've collected a number of pipes. In my collection
today I have just over 60. They range from the higher grades of
SBang, Jes Chonowitsch, Paul Ilstead, Ingo Garbe, Jorn Larsen,
W.O. Larsen, some DR Dunhill's, Julius Vesz, Barling, Barbi and
Ser Jacopo's. On the lower to medium grades I smoke Peterson's,
Charatans, Castello, Don Carlos, Ferndowns, Nording, Mastro de Paja,
Bonaquisti, JT Cooke, Butz Chacom and Ardors. All are smoked
regularly and have enjoyed each by the fireplace or reading a Sherlock
Holmes mystery. I tend to be a English kind of guy and lean towards
Latakia's, Perique, Orientals, Cased and Pressed Virginias. Smoke lots
of Esoterica's Penzance, Margate and Pembroke, but smoke the McClelland,
Ashton, Dunhill, Davidoff, Butera's Royal Vintage, Cornell & Diehl, CAO
Blend of Old Ironsides, Wessex Tradition and Timm's London Blend 250 & 1000
just to name a few.
As many of us try to find the tobacco we can call our
signature blend, it's a great time to be a "Brother of the Briar"
Keep up the great articles and as you always say, "Smoke in Peace"

Subject: On setting up a pipe club...
Oh my! Never, ever underestimate the power of the 'net - and PD, of
course.
In the last issue, I posted the information the Peter Wiseman, Hon Sec and
treasurer of the Pipe Club of London, has published some notes on the
formation of a pipe club.
Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond my control, I was not able to
tell Peter that I had done this until a few days after the event You can
guess what happened - he was deluged with requests!. This causes him some
small inconvenience and cost as he has to trot down to the corner shop to
have his notes photocopied - the document runs to 15 pages.
Despite this, Peter is still very willing to make these notes available -
but here is the deal. The notes will be supplied free of charge to members
of the Pipe Club of London. (Membership is available to all pipesmokers,
anywhere in the world. Only about 50% of our members live in the UK).
Non-members can still request a copy of these notes, but a charge of US$20
will be made. This covers the cost of photocopying, postage and the bank
charges levied on us for changing dollars into pounds.
Applications for membership of the Pipe Club of London, of a copy of
Peter's notes (or both) should be made in writing to :

All wonderfull, but......!
What they offer is a DEER-HUNTING trip. It is called" with pipe and rifle in
Scotland". I am stunned to learn that they associate pipe smoking with
hunting. I am a liberal guy (being from Holland) and I feel that everyone
should do the things he wants to do.
But a hunting trip is not the first thing which comes to mind when I think
of pipe smoking.
It is strange that a factory that makes damn good pipe tobacco is promoting
hunting. I have sent them a copy of this mail and I am anxious to learn
their views.

Hello.
I have a tabacco pipe from the 1800's. It is in need of repair. The
piece between the the bowl and the long tube (an elbow) is missing. Do
you know of any tabacco shop that repairs old pipes.
The bowl has a copper lid that is hinged to the bowl. Also there is a
deer, grass and trees painted on the bowl.

I really appreciate all the effort you put into Pipes Digest. However
it seems to consist of a lot of comments and questions, but few
responses. Can't you set it up with threads so that people can answer,
and see, answers to questions?
I inherited the pipe-smoking habit from my father. He was appalled at
tobacco taxes, so grew and cured his own. Unfortunately he's not alive
any more, so I can't ask him how he did it. Now I'm retired and should
have the time available, I'm thinking about how I might be able to
grow and cure my own pipe tobacco. Sounds like a good way to avoid the
outlandish taxes the Federal and state governments are planning to
impose.
My requirements are, I think, quite simple because I prefer Black
Cavendish - the inexpensive tobacco you can can buy from drug
stores. Strange as it may seem to some pipe smokers, I prefer the
simple tobacco to the blends that tobacco stores offer.
Can anyone offer sources of information about growing tobacco plants,
about harvesting the leaves, about curing them, and about preparing
the cured leaves for smoking?
If anyone has suggestions, I suggest you post them to Pipes Digest, so
that everyone can see them. Otherwise, respond to me at

buy house blends from different tobacconists they are usually very
good the question is .......is there a well known maker of tobacco
that produces aromatic tobacco? mc cellend frog morton rattrays?? as
far as i know these companys produce only straight and or english
blends thanks for any help .please email me if anyone has any ideas

Subject: Cleaning Vulcanite stems
I hate hard work!. I also hate spending money. I tried Dunhill and
Savenelli stem restoring polish and they worked well - but they were hard
work and very expensive. So here is my personal method for restoring
vulcanite stems, which may appeal to other lazy tightwads.
First, I use a non-abrasive kitchen cleaning gunk - the brand I use is
called "Shiny Sinks" and is widely available in UK supermarkets, although I
suspect that any other brand of "creme" cleanser will work just as well.
One 500cc bottle costs about 2 UK pounds and will last forever (providing
your wife doesn't start using it on the sinks). I find it best to use a
fairly harsh cloth - a bit of old denim is just about right. With light,
easy rubbing you will restore the stem to a serviceable black semi-matt
shine and remove most, perhaps all, of the white oxidisation. Really crusty
stems may need another application.
To get the stem really shiny, the second step is to visit you handy car
accessory shop and buy a can of colour restorer - the stuff that cuts
through traffic film. I use T-Cut and, again, one can will last forever,
unless you start using it on your car as well. Gentle buffing with this
stuff will give you a polish that is (almost) as good as you will achieve
on a polishing wheel. For this step, I favour application on a piece of
old T-shirt.
For bowls, I use "Lord Sheraton 1773 Pure Beeswax Balsam", which is
available in the UK at major supermarkets. This stuff is great! Simply
wipe it on, let it dry for a while, wipe it off - and admire the shine!
Regular applications bring about the quality of polish previously only
accomplished by the diligent application of nose-oil.
Of course, skilled use of the correct grades of polishing wheels and
compounds will give a superior finish - but we don't all have access to a
polishing wheel.
I'm sure that other readers will have their own favourite restoration
techniques - I look forward to reading them in future editions of PD!

You may already know about www.ebay.com -- the auction site. I have
been the high bidder on 11 pipes in recent days, everything ranging
from a 1988 Dunhill Christmas Pipe, unsmoked, for $450 to an oriental
jade pipe for $24. There are lots of Dunhills (search under
"Dunhill") and many other pipes and pipe stuff. Most items stay up
for bid for 6 or 7 days. One has to register to buy or sell, but
buying cost nothing and takes only a few minutes to register. Sellers
pay a small fee to post, and then a small percentage of the total
sale. The only reason I can think that I'm telling you this -- aside
from the universal camaraderie of pipe smokers -- is that some of you
will have great pipes to post for me to buy. Love your digest.

[Oh, yes, Dan; ebay has been responsible for the disappearance of
large sums of $$$ from my pocket! Not for pipes, though; for an
Aladdin lamp (amber Washington drape, electrified) and two flat-wick
lamps that I really paid too much for. BTW, I've got the Washington
drape on my desk now, alight, and I think it serves to some extent as
a smoke eater. Has anyone else had this experience? Of course, if you
intend to buy an Aladdin, I'd wait until Jan. 2, 2000; prices are
through the roof with Y2K and all. -S. ]

several times with fresh cleaners; once the shank seems pretty
soaked, take a shank brush or a handful of bristle pipecleaners
and scrub until no more gunk comes out.
Then, take another fuzzy cleaner soaked in alcohol and leave it
in overnight. If a LOT of brown comes out you can do it over
until the cleaner comes out white.
Basically, you want to first soften the tar and gunk in the
shank, then scrub out all you can. After that, you can try to
leach out the tars and oils that have soaked more deeply into the
wood. Instead of the last step, some folks take a drill bit and
drill the shank out to its original size, but I don't advise this
unless you really know what you're doing.

Subject: Norwegian pipe ????
I have a pipe that belonged to my GF John M Thompson . The pipe is approx.
22 1/2 " long w/meerschaum bowl. Bowl is or looks like it could be silver
and hinges w/vents under. Inscribed on cover is J. M. Thompson Oct. 30
1910. My GGF Martin Knutsmoen Taraldson Thompson came from Norway in 1867
Vaaler i Solor. It my be that he went back to Norway and purchased it for
my GF John. Back part of bowl is stamped with G. Larsen and on the metal
part next to bowl reads H. H. then a small inscribed tea pot, then 830S.
May be mark for silversmith ??. Do you have any info on this or do you
know of anyone else that may be of help to me ? Thank you kindly for any

Subject: Clay Pipes
I don't smoke (never have), but I used to collect clay pipes - plus a couple
of miscellaneous oddities I acquired. Most were stolen (and probably
discarded) with some other stuff some years ago. I am intersted in
collecting again, and like to mount and display some of the pipes. I would
be very interseted in any information on sources. I'm not necessarily
interested in rare antiques - just any clays new or old. To me they are
just different and "nice" things, interesting for their shapes, special
editions, and history as well as the crafstmanship. I have several "hooves",
"acorns", a leg (ladies' - with stocking!) and a set of churchwardens from
9 inches up to sixteen.
Also, you may be intersted in hearing about a pipe I once owned. Excuse my
terminology - I'm not an expert! It was given to me on my birthday by my
ex-mother-in-law. It belonged to my ex-wife's grandfather and I gave it back
to her when we divorced (only fair thing to do). It had a maker's name W.
Freidlander on it. The bowl was meerschaum, but very plain in shape - almost
like an overgrown clay. The rim was of engraved metal with a flat engraved
and pierced lid, pivoted so that it could be swung out of the way. The
meerschaum stem was short - maybe an inch. Attached was a long metal stem,
again engraved. It was angled steeply, though the only curve was in the
amber mouth-piece, held on by a (bone?) threaded piece inside the joint. The
stem appeared to be about 6 inches or so long. The whole thing fit in a
velvet lined pipe-shaped hinged case. I might add that I was given the pipe
in England. I am now an American citizen. The mouthpiece was broken, so I
had a reproduction spare (fake - whoa! amber too expensive!) made for display
purposes in Washington State. Anyway, the metal parts were said to be
pewter, but when I started to clean it, I immediately discovered it was
silver. While I was gently rubbing it, I was startled when the stem started
to give way. I thought I had broken it, then I realized that it was
telescopic. It pulled out to form a long stem, probably a good 10 inches or
more. Sherlock Holmes might have loved it! (But he was a Calibash fan?). I
would love to own it again, but I don't think my ex-wife would want to part
with it.
I used to buy clays sometimes from "Sam's Pipe Shop" in The Angel, Islington
when I worked near there back in the 70's. Sadly Sam is long since passed
away and the shop gone (I looked for it when I was back visiting once).
I also still have a "commemerative" clay bowl that came out of the Thames
mud. It was difficult to read the wording - something about Egypt, with a
castle gate on it. Several years later in Seattle, I happened on a clearance
sale in a gift shop near the Space Needle. There I found to my surprise, a
brand new pipe from the exact same (but repaired) mold. It was easy to read
and commemerated the battle of Alexandria. Quite a coincidence to find half
a world away!! The pipe still showed some of the original mold damage and
wear, but some had been refurbished. Of course the molder's initial was
updated. So one of these days I will mount the two together for display.

I have a clay pipe that I am looking to identify. I know absolutely
nothing about pipes, so any help would be appreciated.
This is very old and was found in a trunk in my great aunts attic. As
I said, a clay pipe. Looks like the outside was maybe black at one
time. Missing the stem. On the front of the bowl, there is a
raised imaged of a cannon w/ wheels, a pile of cannonballs right next
to it. There is also an image of an American flag waving above the
cannon. I can make out red and white striped on the flag, but I can't
make out how what would be in the blue square reserved for stars, it's
worn off. I can't find any other markings on the bowl. If anyone has
seen anything like this, or can point me in the direction where I
should be looking, I would appreciate the help. I am not subscribed

Steve,
I am most appreciative of your time well spent in publishing this
digest. I have a few questions and comments to make in response to
January's issue:
In the ongoing debate on what music best complements pipe smoking, I
must agree with Steve Johnson's recommendation of a "mentally
stimulating" choice. As a listener of everything from Busta Rhymes to
Sinatra to Wagner, my far and away favorites are any of Verdi's
operas. I find Rigoletto and La Traviata to be the most engaging.
Mr. Verdi, my Eric Nording freehand, and myself have certainly had
some late nights together.
In response to the gentleman wondering if real gourd calabash pipes
were still being made, the answer is yes. I bought a large Auerbach
pipe while in Austria last year, and it has grown to be my favorite
smoke. I looked for the address of the store where I bought it, but
couldn't find it.
Lastly, I will be moving to Chicago in May and wondered if there are
any active pipe clubs there. I'd greatly appreciate any info.

I finally got around to my backlog of Pipes Digests and would like
to offer a few belated responses.
Thanks to Tim Lang for forwarding this very important information
about bread. Since I'm currently working as a baker, I am ashamed
at not being aware of these facts. I am taking immediate steps to
remove all traces of the Demon Dough from my house and intend to
insist on appropriate safety equipment at work. ;-D
In response to Jeff Culbreath's reflections, I should merely like
to note that from the information available to me, the preferred
theological beverage and tobacco of Luther was beer and cigars,
while Zwingli and other "Reformed" theologians favored wine and
pipes. Since the U.C.C. (United Church of Christ) is a theological
heir to Luther, Zwingli, and Calvin (as well as Wesley, Knox, and
the Anabaptists), I show no partiality and partake of all four
equally.
In response to Alexander Theberge's query on music that's smokin',
I should like to offer that I seem to rotate between Jethro Tull,
Mannheim Steamroller, Enya, Tom Lehrer, and the Austin Lounge
Lizards. (BTW Steve, my compliments on your excellent taste in
music . . . I was able to upgrade every official Tull album to CD,
which naturally is a sizable collection in itself.) Unfortunately, I
have not yet converted my classical or Scott Joplin to CD yet.
In response to Uli, although I've never been to Havanna, I understand
that as long as you go to an actual shop, you should be able to get
what you want, but that there is also a booming business in fake
Cubans, so beware of streetside vendors and the like. (From an article
in Cigar Afficiando about 2 years ago.) Please enjoy a few sticks on
my behalf, especially as Clinton has just announced his intentions to
continue attempts to overthrow the Cuban government -- I don't know if
we'll see legal Cuban cigars in the U.S. again in my lifetime. (The
first time around, I was too young to enjoy them properly, being a
toddler when the embargo went into effect.)
Finally, a question: About two years ago, Peter Stokebye offered what
was apparently a limited edition tobacco, in a gold foil pouch with the
words "Private Reserve" and "Personally for You" on the pouch and label.
I recently rediscovered a bit I had in "hiding" when we moved. (Every
time we move my wife is amazed at the number of pouches of tobacco and
cigars I have in different rooms in the house--but why should I have to
go to another room just because I want to light up?)
Anyway, I've discovered that I'm rather fond of this blend and would
love to get more, but I understand it's no longer available. Can anyone
give me a good idea of a close substitue that might be readily
available in the U.S.? (Feel free to email me directly.)
My apologies for rambling so, but I guess I've been saving it up since
the last time I posted to the digest.

Dear Steve and fellow PD readers,
I would like to thank all of those who sent me advice and directly put me
into contact with Mr. Frank Cervone, the manager at Barclay Rex, re: the
unsmokeable cigars I had received from them. Mr. Cervone has sent me
replacement cigars (which I don't know, but soon will...they're "El
Glorioso Dominicano").
Obviuosly, judging from the number of e-mails I received Barclay-Rex is
very esteemed by pipe and cigar smokers and this episode surely confirmed
this.
Although, I have never been to the shop personally, I will continue to
send my "emissaries" there and hope to go there personally next time I'm
in NY (haven't been back to the US in 8 years... so it's about time...).

Subject: Damaged Cigars from U.S.
Good Day to all.
This is in response to Lorenzo Muan who wrote that he received several
damaged cigars from a cigar shop in New York city. There are a couple of
explanations for the damaged cigars.
1. The store had something go wrong with their humidor. If that happened
and the help was inexperienced then that would account for both the bugs
and them being dried out.
2. Since Mr. Muan stated that the person who purchased them was
inexperienced then could it be possible that she did not store them
correctly. It only takes one afternoon in a car to raise the temp to a
level to allow the bugs to hatch.
These are only two of several things that could have gone wrong.
Although I can't speak for the shop in NYC I have never been to a shop
that I felt was disreputable maybe grumpy or ornery. The shop I
currently work for (shame less plug: Smoke & Snuff West Shore Mall Tampa
FL) deals with many visitors from outside the U.S. and we work extremely
hard to provide excellent service to all our customers experienced or
novice.
I hope this is helps explain what could have happened to the cigars.
Also as a warning to everybody who travels with cigars make sure that
you carry them with you and don't put them in your checked baggage.
Putting them in checked baggage could subject them to pressure changes
that will split the cigar.
Thank you Steve and the group for letting me post this to a wonderful
source of information.

I've been lurking on this digest for about a year. It has really been
informative and pleasant to read it. I figure I should submit my pipe
history for posterity.
About a year ago I when I was 18 years old and a freshman in Computer
Engineering at Oregon State University I was introduced to pipe smoking
by my roommate. I admit that I was an anti-cigarette/tobacco nazi,
that's why I am somewhat sympathetic to those who treat tobacco as
though it were heroine. Anyways, I bought a calabash pipe and thought
for a few months that it was briar until I subscribed to this
newsletter. Anyways, I used to smoke a bowl every night with my
roommate. As freshman at a university life brings many trials. SO every
night we would stand outside underneath the flickering neon lights, talk
about life, whine about our relationships with girls, and bond. I can
close my eyes and see neon lights reflected in a puddle on black
pavement at night shimmering and changing as my nicotene influenced mind
reflected on the trials of the day. Now it is a year later and I am
studying English instead of Computers. I just realized I haven't smoked
a bowl in about two months. The reason? a girl... I forgot about my pipe
since that fateful hug turned into a kiss at 3 a.m. December 7th in her
room after walking her home. Now we are just friends, again. Tonight, I
walked her home and hugged her goodnight, nothing else. We never could
hug like normal people do. Why do two young souls cling so hard? Why is
it painful to let go? I have questions. I think I'll slip on my jacket
and take a walk to the overhang with the flickering neon lights where I
can smoke and reflect. It's been raining, it always does in Oregon...

Subject: Pipe History
Steve,
Where can I find some history and info on Wellington Pipes. I was given a
Wellington Calabash for helping a friend move and I don't know much about the
history. Also are their any resources concerning pipe history? I finally got
my hands on my grandfather's collection of pipes back in August. My uncle
came down from Wichita for a visit with my grandmother and brought me
Grandpa's collection. He also gave a very nice Preben Holm Freehand of his.
My grandfather was my hero as a kid and it is so special to have the very
pipes he smoked. He loved billiards and Burley tobacco. Even though we have
different tastes in pipes and tobaccos (I prefer bents and English blends) how
unique it is to have his pipe collection. Pipes as well as other family
heirlooms should be passed onto future generations. Thanks again for your
invaluable resource to the world of pipe smoking!

Dear beaty@,
I have a question about pipes. I'd like to find out the name of a
specific type of pipe, but I don't find an example of it displayed
anywhere on your pipes.org page. I thought, perhaps if I described it,
you would be able to give me an idea of the type of pipe it is.
Unfortunately, I only have two pieces of information to give you beyond
a brief description. One is that the first place I remember seeing the
pipe is in a picture of Barry Goldwater from his Presidential campaign
days. So, perhaps it is a type of pipe popular in the sixties. The
other is that it looks a little like the "Canadian" pipe displayed at
"www.pipes.org/Pictures/pipes1.gif," except that it's all black, without
a visible difference between the stem and bowl.
Despite its utilitarian and "no-frills" look, I have only seen one of
these pipes once. I saw a guy walking down the street smoking one and
asked him where he had gotten it. His response: "Ha! New York City.
You'll never find one of these here."

Subject: Pipe finish
I have a five year old billiard, briar, with a medium finish, that I
purchased at a local tobacco shop. It is a very nice "service pipe,"
but the finish is starting to lose some of its' luster and the top of
the bowl is getting some staining.
I spoke with the folks at the tobacco shop, trying to locate a
cleaner/finish restorer that wouldn't be absorbed too much, so as to
destroy the flavor of the pipe. However, they were unable to provide
a product, brand name or location where I could find such an animal
(needless to say I was disappointed, since I have always had pretty
good luck & service with this store).
If anyone knows a product, brand name or location where I can find a
finsih cleaner/restorer (not pipe sweetener) please let me know. Your
assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Reference pipe sweetening, if you haven't already reviewed it, take a
gander at "The Professor's Pipe Sweetening Treatment" (link on
pipes.org main page). Believe it or not, scotch works well for the
"alcohol" portion of this cleaning operation, and imparts a very
unique flavor :-)

A friend of mine has a castello pipe he received from his father.
We were looking for as much information on the pipe as possible. The
stamping on the bottom of the shank says Reg no. 66171n5, made in
cantu, Castello, sea rock briar, 32/A, italy. It has the US import
Diamond, and it is a "canadian" style with a sand blasted finish, dk.
brown almost black in color. the pipe has been used.
My friend has been offered a number of trades, but does not want to
part with the pipe. none the less we would appreciate any more
information or an estimated value.
The pipe is almost certainly pre '88, but does not have any SC or K
markings that were mentioned in one of your articles.

A quick question... I've heard of "tongue bite" and think I know what
that is, but I think I have a different symptom. My tongue doesn't
get sore, but is does turn a black color, especially the back of the
tongue, under the roof of the mouth.
I smoke frequently (8-10 bowls/day). Has anyone else experienced this
problem. Any suggestions. I'd prefer not to quit altogether, but it
might come to that if the problem persists.

I'm a very new pipe smoker indeed... in fact this
week. However since my first experiment on Sunday I have gained 5 pipes (from
my father in law) I bought some Capt. Black Royal and have enjoyed some
lovely salubrious times sitting on the deck. I decided on Capt. Black Royal
after it was suggested in the pipes FAQ essay I also used the Professor's
Sweetener technique on all the pipes as they were old and I thought it best to
start fresh. What I want to know is how old two of the pipes are.
1) A Four Dot Rustic "Pembroke" Made in England by Sasieni. (I believe it was
probably bought late 60's or early 70's is there any one who knows for sure?)
2) A Stoneage Sandblast made in Milan ( There's no other markings but I
believe it dates from the same time)
Is there a site or list of all pipes ever made? It would seems that such a
catalogue would be invaluable and also relatively easy to create with the
wealth of knowledge available. That way any pipe that had enough identifying
marks could be identified on a search routine. The catalogue could be updated
as and when required.

Hello there to all of you pipe smokers fellows ! I have a
question/concern I would like to share with you so maybe I get an answer
to that: as the carbon cake im my pipes grow (but not too thick and
before I need to ream it), I notice it breaks in small pieces from time
to time, I mean, it seems it is not uniformelly developed !?! What can
be wrong ? I do not smoke aromatics, I always take all the
smoked/unsmoked tobacco out of the chamber and sometimes I pass a pipe

I've got this problem out here in Colorado; perhaps you have
similar problems in your state. The problem, simply stated, is that 55
million Americans can no longer enjoy a smoke. Oh, we can buy 'em
at exorbitant rates with this new extortion placed upon the tobacco
companies, but I can't enjoy a cigarette standing outside a restaurant
when it's 20 degrees. We're not accommodated. We're treated as
second-rate people. Well, I'm just not going to put up with it
anymore. Period. And, I've found a legal and honorable way out of
this. Go back to America's Premier Document, the Declaration of
Independence. In Congress, July 4, 1776, some fifty-six men got
together to make it reality. It's made for us, the citizens of the
United States. Let's use it. Here's what I found so far: "But when a
long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same
Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is
their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to

Hi Steve:
Again, thanks much for the web site and Digest. I discovered you
through a couple of web searches for pipe-related info that yielded
issues of the Digest. I was taken by the tone, sought you out, and I'm
very happy that I did.
Tried pipes about 40 years ago and loved them and the tobacco.
Because I was then very much on the hop and pipes weren't a quick smoke,
I went (back) to cigarettes. Subsequently drove a cab in NYC and found
that I couldn't tolerate the cigarette paper and additives in addition to
the steady diet of exhaust fumes, so I went to cigars (Danneman cheroots
from Brazil as an everyday and an occasional Royal Jamaica as a treat).
After the cab, back to cigarettes.
The pace is a bit slower now and I've re-discovered pipes. Thus far
I have a Savinelli, Wilke, Nielsen, two Petersons, a meerschaum-lined
LaRocca, and two meerschaums. Several points and questions have arisen
that I thought to ask here.
The Nielsen is an estate pipe and presents a couple of questions.
It's a brandy shape and on top of its oval shank are the words "Neilsen"
- "handmade" - "in Denmark", from top to bottom (w/ top and bottom lines
forming an oval). On the bottom of the shank is "MADE IN DENMARK" over
"962". Would anybody know anything about the manufacturer and age of
this pipe? The stem is a replacement so there is no stylized "bj" that
would indicate a Bjarne (somewhere I saw the name Bjarne Nielsen).
The pipe also has an unusual taste (certainly different from any
other pipe that I've smoked). The briar feels (somehow) harder and less
porous than my other pipes. The grain is busy and varies from vertical
to cross to swirls, depending on which part of the pipe you're looking
at. It doesn't look or feel to be lacquered or anything else artificial,
but it keeps a high lustre. It adds its own dry, sharp (tart, but not
sour) taste to whatever tobacco I smoke in it. The taste is not
unpleasant, but the tongue bite is! It seems to be mellowing as it gets
smoked, but I can't tell whether I'm riding a tiger that will be tamed
into a good friend, or whether the pipe's a dud and that's why the first
owner got rid it. Has anybody had a similar experience?
The Savinelli is identified on the box as a Virginia 606. Is the
number in any way a size designation? I would call it a bent billiard.
The pipe seems to have a juice-niche just below the draw hole. The good
news: it catches juices and leads to a dry, quiet smoke. The bad news:
only twice have I been able to run a pipe cleaner from bit to bowl. The
cleaner goes to the juice niche, leaving untouched a channel from the
draw hole @1/8" into shank. Does that 1/8" represent enough of a residue
problem to take the pipe apart after every smoke (increasing the risk of
a loose stem)?
I mentioned that the LaRocca was meerschaum lined. After purchasing
it, I read somewhere that meerschaum linings are often not made from
block but, instead, are compacted from meerschaum dust. I tried a web
search but found no specifics about LaRocca pipes. The pipe smokes fine
and my taste buds are certainly not up to sensing a distinction.
However, as a fact collector (I'd rather have 'em and not need 'em ...),
I'm curious. Does anybody know anything about LaRocca pipes?
I have been unable to find the Hacker and Ehwa books. With your
more-than-3000-strong readership, would it make any sense to approach the
pertinent publishers? They might find a run of a couple of thousand to
be profitable and attractive.
I skimmed quickly over much of the politically-oriented material in
the earlier Digests as being past and, therefore, dead. The basic
issues, of course, are very much alive. Whatever happened to "the Land
of the Free"? I stand ready to call, write, and vote, and I'm pleased to
believe that I'm not alone in doing so.

I am a beginner pipe smoker and just bought my first pipe today and
was looking for a few tips (nobody I know smokes a pipe).

I would like to share this experience with everyone. I know that often
times customer service seems to be a thing of the past. The customer is
seldom the one that is "always right" and we always seem to be shaken and
taken by the buying experience. It also seems to me that in the midst of
all of this it still rings true that pipe smokers and tobacconists seem to
be some of the most honest people anywhere!
My wife went to the tobacco shop that I frequent, The Briary in
Birmingham Alabama. She was in search of a pipe for me that was a suprise
and I actually had no idea or hint of her intentions. upon her arrival she
met with john the person who sold me my first pipe and every pipe
thereafter. John could have talked my wife into buying just about any pipe
in the shop, but, he used sound judgement and helped her in picking out the
exact Peterson that he and I had discussed a few weeks prior. Just another
way that pipe smokers, which of coursese he is, and tobacconists continue
to amaze me by standing head and shoulders above the rest of the sales type
people.
I dont wish to be a commercial for the Briary because it's not about the
shop it's about the people that work there and their dedication to the pipe
smoking community. Having only been a pipe smoker for a short while I
already feel "at home". With Pipes Digest, ASP and pipes.org you cant help

Subject: Question
Hi there. I'm a beginning pipe smoker and am still trying to learn the
ropes. My first question is about filters. From what I've found out,
there are two types of pipe filters and I have been trying the regular
paper filters. I have heard from some peple that if you use pipe
filters, you are supposed to inhale the smoke and have heard from others
that you're not supposed to inhale pipe at all. Which one of these
opinions are true? And if you use filters, how often are you supposed
to change them? I also have a question on the appropriate thickness of
the carbon in a pipe. How do I know when to stop scraping away at the
carbon? How much carbon are you actually supposed to leave in the pipe?

[My personal leaning is not to inhale pipes at all, filtered or
no. Never having used filters, I can't say how often to change
them. And, regarding cake, about 1-2 mm works for me. -S. ]

I started smoking a pipe about 10 days ago--A Dr. Graybow. I really liked
the experience. One problem--the pipe clogged up. There was not blockage
in the stem, neither above or below the break. I took the pipe back to the
store and replaced it. No charge--great but the new pipe today, three days
later, is getting difficult to draw. What am I doing to destroy these
pipes? Help.

[I can't imagine what it might be, but the cause has got to be
simple. By "no blockage", can you run a cleaner in one side and see it
come out the other? -S. ]

I really miss the registration of long-term pipers in the tobacco
retailer-shops. I would be glad if the tobacco factories would find
me their outcoming new products to taste. The pipe factories could
send some brochures as well to the users, only if we would be
registered somehow. So that is my opinion about the above mentioned
thing...

Subject: Pipes
Perhaps you can help. First of all I live in Orlando Fl., a very
unsophisticated area for pipe smokers. You would think a place like this that
brings tourist from all over the world would....... well, never mind. Here is
what I do. I will buy a Dr. Graybow in the blister pack remove the stem and
sand off the varnish. After the varnish is removed and the pipe sanded with
very fine sand paper I polish the natural briar with white rouge on a buffing
wheel. This actually polishes the brier to a high luster. The natural beauty
is brought out of the briar and I do believe it smokes and breaths easier. I
have really discovered some fine pipes without to may plugs under that
varnish. What's your opinion? Thank you, Chef Arthur

Hi. Let me introduce myself: my name's Ben.
Quite new to pipe smoking, but i have good reason to think that maybe
someday i'll be old to pipe smoking, if i make it that far. I'd been
smoking cigs, two to five a day, roll my own, for about four years.
but there was always... something missing. I liked the taste of
tobacco, i liked the idea of holding fire, i liked the ritual of
rolling and lighting. Tobacco itself, i felt, had great potential.
But i never liked those crazy cigarettes. Brand to brand i'd go,
searching for that something that i knew was out there, somewhere.
What was i thinking? I don't know. But i knew the moment i lit that
first pipefull, i knew. SO it's been a couple of months and i don't
think i'll ever smoke another cigarette again.
I was so surprised to see that one of you guys mentioned Sherlock's
Haven in SF to be one of his TWO favorite tobacco shops in the WORLD,
after some 20 YEARS of searching. Sherlock's Haven being about a
block and a half from my work, where i bought my first through fourth
pipes, where i buy all of my tobacco, hell i don' t know nuthin'
else!, so i was gonna look around for something better, but i guess i
needn't bother after this fella's apparently done my looking for me.

Actually, in Portland Oregon, I checked out Rich's? I think, downtown,
haven't bothered to see if it's in your listing, I'm sure it must be,
cuz its frikkin' huge! And the crusty guy behind the counter, beard
down to his belly-button, possessed a rather impressive internal
database of pipe-knowledge. I had to leave, it wasn't fair to my
travel companion. As far as I could tell, though, the only advantage
Sherlock's Haven offers is a good selection of useds and seconds.
About a year ago I started riding a bike, riding a lot. As I rode
more and more those cigarettes appealed to me less and less. Uhg,
breathing became such a pleasant thing, all day, every twenty minutes,
I'd breathe real deep-like. Mmmm. That's something I really love
about the pipe: I enjoy taking deep breathes while smoking it. I find
the nicotine-Oxygen combo to pack a pleasing wallop. But I have a
question. I wonder how many of y'all engage in extended aerobic
activity at high elevations, and if you notice the pipe-smoking to
give you any problems. I realize it's nothing like drawing tar smoke
past your heart and into your lungs, but I think it's possible that
nicotine itself has a negatory affect. Not that it matters, ah gotta
smoke something!
