Well, the new Linux box is up, and (being about 8 years newer than my
old faithful machine), it can do a few things that it couldn't -- like
play tunes. So I'm going to try an experiment. I've got Kenny Wayne
Shepherd, Spirit, and Gin Blossoms cued up for relaxation after two
long fights today with rotten 2x4s and the scriptage that runs the
Digest. Plus coffee and Sambuca, and, of course, a Nording loaded with
some Larsen's cherry that I haven't smoked in a while but is really
not bad. Let me know if the environment affects the editing...

to let pipe smokers in the Salem Oregon area know that T.Whittaker
Tobaccos in the Lancaster Mall is sponsoring a pipe smokers night in
the store every Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
Activities consist of tobacco sampleing,showing off your favorite
pipes and on occasion just plain lying to each other.(All in fun of
course).
The group is small now but if enough folks in the Salem area see

The members of the Milwaukee Area Pipe Society MAPS would like to
thank Pipes Digest for the opportunity of posting our Inaugural Pipe
Show/Swap. The recently completed show was a wonderful success. We
sold out the tables and had good walk-in traffic. We were supported by
many generous donations to the silent auction and had excellent
bids. Many tableholders and persons attending the show responded very
favorably in our survey request and we gleaned some good ideas for
next year. Generally speaking everyone had an great time and many new
and used pipes exchanged hands. We are planning for another show next
year and will advise you as soon as the date and location is

Dear Steve:
Thoroughly enjoyed issue #275. Read in one sitting!. I would like to
respond to some of the queries in this latest newsletter, or at least
add my two cents.
Regarding Mountbatten - this was a less expensive brand made by
Charatan, (not a bad looking pipe and decent smoker) I have one, a
large billiard reddish in tone with vulcanite bit. I don't know if it
is still made. On filtered pipes- I have a number of them purchased
in Europe as well as thru Dan Pipe. I do not use the filters and find
them great smokes. (No, it's not like putting your lips on a car
exhaust and inhaling).
The puzzler with a ten word alternative to a brown variegated stem
.....Cumberland.
For the guy who wanted a good cleaner for the rim of his pipe....I use
Irish Whiskey, a combination of the peat and alchohol really does the
job .......(I only dip a finger into the shot glass)...Guess where the
rest goes.
I recently ordered bulk Mcclelland 2050 now this was a pleasant
surprise. Layers of changing taste, with a top note of
clove????cinammon???.....Its a decent smoke for a Summer alternative
to Latakia....
I recently obtained a handmade pipe from Frank Genna out of New
Jersey. A really nice piece of wood and from the first a consistently
good smoker. Frank is a fine gentleman who is very responsive to your
design requiremnts.
Well that's it. It's time to light up my new Tim West Carved
Hawkbill and enjoy the hell out of it ...

Hi Steve, in answer to a couple of questions:
Pipe finishes. I use Tung oil (available anywhere) to bring my briar pipes
to a nice gloss. With two or three coats it lasts incredibly well. I oiled
my lunch pipe, which stays in my vest pocket all day, maybe four or five
months ago and aside from the area where my thumb rests, it's still quite
shiny. This isheresy in certain circles, which I gladly accept. My pipes
look nice and shine like diamonds! What else matters? (tip: use fewer
coats for less gloss, I just happen to like the high gloss myself)
Meerschaum bowls. Why wouldn't they darken? When you combust the fuel, it
leaves a residue. Meerschaums get a cake just like any other material. I
have several dozen meers and they all do that. There's no way to stop it,
and quite frankly I wouldn't want to. I know a few folks who only smoke
meers with gloves on! I can't even begin to imagine that. With time your
pipe will take on a nice dark hue. That's life, might as well enjoy it!

Hello Mike and others,
The most common name for "L&JS" here in Europe is "Les Wood" and
in the States they are better known as "Ferndowns".
They are great pipes, well made, and oil cured. I love all the ones I have!
Comparable with Ferndowns are to me e.g. Ashtons, the quality of which is
said to have somewhat deteriorated during the last few years.
Mellow puffs and dry ashes!

little pipe. It is a straight, black, saddle-bite Billiard with a teflon
tenon, marked BARTOLI / 3 / Elegante - meaning elegance in Italian.
So far I am unable to find the address of the BARTOLI company, neither
through the web nor at the yellow pages.

I would like to thank Ian Adkins for his generous diplomacy in the
last digest in regard to my rant of the internal combustion motor. It
gives hope of a new future that we will adapt to our environment in a
healthier way.
My condolances to you Ian in regard to your mother. I hope some day
she will join our ranks.
I would like to start a thread of discussion if at all possible about
growing tobacco. I know that this has been discussed befor, but is any
one at this time growing their own plants (for personal consumption of
course)? And I do mean tobacco. I have looked on line at SBC seeds and
they have books and kits and even a shredding machine for cutting up
the finished product. They even have a moderated discussion board for
the passing of info on growing tobacco. There seems to be some good
tips in there but I would like to discuss this with some of the
community befor making the investment of time and energy. I'll start
off with simple questions that I have and see if any one responds for
every one's bennefit on the following digests.
-Has any one out there grown their own tobac and been successful at it.
-How many crops befor you got the hang of it?
-Was there a noticeable difference in quality from store baught to the
home grown product?
-Did you feel that your product was a healthier option? (ie less or no
pesticides and additives)
Any way, let us all know. I think it would be fun to share this info
with all subscribers in the issues following. Additionally I ask that
my e-mail address not be posted for security purposes.

Can someone tell me how to get the bitter tasting, greenish-yellow crud
off the plastic-bakelite stem of a pipe? And how do they polish up?
Last, in my pursuit of what famous pipe smokers stuffed in their
favorite briars, is there any C.S. Lewis expert out there who knows what
the Christian writer puffed on? I have photos of him with tins of
something on his desk, but it is difficult to discern. I assume an
English blend, but who knows?

Subject: Cornell & Diehl and Schlock Homes [PIPES]
I would like to add my voice to the ones tha sing the praises of Cornell &
Diehl. After months of debating the matter with myself I have finally
called the Tarlers and placed my first order. I was pleasantly shocked when
a box came in the mail a few days later. I am currently going thru my
second order and while I have not found THE BLEND yet, I am pleased with
some of the cavendish blends that I have recieved. A sad side effect of
this is that the tobacco that I had purchased fom my local pipe shop doesn't
taste as well. I don't know if the blends have changed, or if I am just
becoming accustomed to better tobacco, but the old blends now have a
chemically taste as if I could taste preservatives that I couldn't taste
before. I found this worrisome as I had given up Captain Black Gold in
favor of the pipe shop's blends in order to get away from preservatives.
This eases any guilt I had about ordering from Cornell & Diehl or picking up
the occasional tin of Frog Morton on the Town from Cigar & Tobac in Kansas
City.
While rummaging thru a used book store in preparation for last summer's
vacation to Saigon, I ran across "The Incredible Schock Holmes: 12 Stores
from Bagel Street" by Robert L. Fish. Being enough of a Sherlockian to have
read thru the cannon, I picked up the copy. The book is a scream with
clever parodies on everything from Holmes overly complex thought processes
to Watson's difficulty of dates. There are plenty of wonderful pipe
references in this tome ranging from Homes' Yellowbole with shag to my
favorite from "The Adventure of the Lost Prince"
"I had come into the breakfast room of our quarters at 221-B Bagel Street to
find my friend Mr. Schlock Homes in the process of lighting his
after-breakfast hookah, a gift from the Sultan of Swatt, the former Bey
Beruit,..."
Definitely worth keeping an eye out for.

Hello all,
Hope everyone is enjoying their favorite pipe and tobacco's; and will
just take a few lines to comment on the subject. Everyone of course is
different, and has their own tastes likes/dislikes,
eg. bents/straights/finishes/aromatic's/english, etc. However I would
say that most new pipe smokers(including myself) start off smoking
aromatics. some enjoy them and stay with them but as we all
know,. smokers cannot smell the aroma from their blends and can only
'taste' them. For those of you who enjoy aromatics I would suggest
Dunhill's Aromatic Blend. Having progressed though countless blends I
still try new ones and sometimes I'm diappointed and sometimes
delighted, and as we all know some blends work well in a Pot yet are
less so in a Prince for example. In any case I have settled into
English/Oriental blends and if I may I suggest the following :
Dunhills Early Morning (my main mixture), Dunhills Royal Yacht,
Dunhill's Elizabethan Mixture, Dunhill's Nightcap, Dunhill's Mixture
965, Dunhill's Durbar, Dunhill's Light Flake, McCellands Christmas
Cheer, McCellands Arcadia, McCellands Black Shag, McCellands Grey
Havens, McCellands Virginia Woods, Fribourg and Treyer's Wingate and
Waterloo #2 mixtures and Lane's Crown Achievement(my second main
smoke),.. all are excellent tobacco's and cool smoking,..I would also
suggest to start a 'tobacco cellar' stocking up in bulk so as to enjoy
your favorites and let them age further. In my case, it not only
provies me with a constant supply but is better economically, given my
area and the prices.

Ten Myths of the Anti-Smoking Movement
These"Ten Myths of the Anti-Smoking Movement" appear as an appendix in
For Your Own Good.
1. The tobacco companies hid the truth about the hazards and
addictiveness of cigarettes from the American public. Industry
double-talk notwithstanding, warnings about the health risks of smoking
go back hundreds of years. James I, in his 1604 Counterblaste to
Tobacco, called smoking "a custome lothsome to the eye, hatefull to the
Nose, harmefull to the braine, dangerous to the Lungs." In every
generation, tobacco's opponents have echoed him, attributing a long list
of maladies to smoking. (See Chapter 1.) Persuasive scientific evidence
of tobacco's hazards, which began to emerge in the early 1930s, has
received widespread attention since the '50s. (See Chapter 2.) Likewise,
the difficulty of giving up the tobacco habit has been common knowledge
for centuries. James I's lord chancellor, Sir Francis Bacon, observed,
"In our times the use of tobacco is growing greatly and conquers men
with a certain secret pleasure, so that those who have once become
accustomed thereto can later hardly be restrained therefrom." The
17th-century polemicist Johann Michael Moscherosch called smokers
"thralls to the tobacco fiend," while Cotton Mather dubbed them
"Slave[s] to the Pipe." Fagon, Louis XIV's court physician, described
the tobacco habit as "a fatal, insatiable necessity.a permanent
epilepsy." (See Chapter 7.)
2. "Tobacco is tobacco." Although all tobacco products pose some health
risks, cigarettes are by far the most hazardous. Cigars and pipes are
considerably less dangerous. Research by the American Cancer Society
found that "[d]eath rates were far higher in cigarette smokers than in
nonsmokers," while "[c]igar smokers had somewhat higher death rates than
nonsmokers," and "there was little difference between the death rates of
pipe smokers and the death rates of men who never smoked regularly." By
one estimate, smokeless tobacco is 98 percent safer than cigarettes.
(See Chapter 2.)
3. People smoke because of advertising. There is remarkably little
evidence that advertising plays an important role in getting people to
smoke, as opposed to getting them to smoke a particular brand. The 1989
surgeon general's report conceded that "[t]here is no scientifically
rigorous study available to the public that provides a definitive answer
to the basic question of whether advertising and promotion increase the
level of tobacco consumption. Given the complexity of the issue, none is
likely to be forthcoming in the forseeable future." The 1994 report,
which focused on underage smoking, also acknowledged the "lack of
definitive literature." None of the widely publicized studies that have
appeared in recent years, including the much-hyped research on Joe
Camel, actually measured the impact of advertising on a teenager's
propensity to smoke. (See Chapter 3.)
4. Smoking imposes costs on society. Because smokers tend to die earlier
than nonsmokers, the short-term costs of treating tobacco-related
illness are balanced, and probably outweighed, by savings on Social
Security, nursing home stays, and medical care in old age. Every
analysis that takes such long-term savings into account, including
reports from the RAND Corporation, the Congressional Research Service,
and Harvard economist W. Kip Viscusi, concludes that "social cost"
cannot justify raising cigarette taxes. (See Chapter 4.)
5. Secondhand smoke poses a grave threat to bystanders. The evidence
concerning the health effects of secondhand smoke is not nearly as
conclusive as the evidence concerning the health effects of smoking. The
research suggests that people who live with smokers for decades may face
a slightly higher risk of lung cancer. According to one estimate, a
nonsmoking woman who lives with a smoker faces an additional lung cancer
risk of 6.5 in 10,000, which would raise her lifetime risk from about
0.34 percent to about 0.41 percent. Studies of secondhand smoke and
heart disease, including the results from the Harvard Nurses Study
published in 1997, report more-dramatic increases in disease rates-so
dramatic, in fact, that they are biologically implausible, suggesting
risks comparable to those faced by smokers, despite the much lower doses
involved. In any case, there is no evidence that casual exposure to
secondhand smoke has any impact on your life expectancy. (See Chapter
5.)
6. If secondhand smoke really is dangerous, smoking ought to be banned
everywhere, except in private residence. Since almost all of the
epidemiological evidence about the health effects of secondhand smoke
relates to long-term exposure in the home, the fact that this is the one
place exempted from current and proposed smoking bans suggests a
residual concern for property rights. Yet business owners have property
rights, too. If the government respected their right to establish rules
about smoking on their own property, potential employees and customers
could take such policies into account when deciding where to work or
which businesses to patronize. Whether secondhand smoke is a health
hazard or merely a nuisance, such a voluntary system is the most
appropriate way to deal with the conflicting demands of smokers and
nonsmokers, since it allows for diversity and competition, rather than
simply imposing the will of the majority on everyone. (See Chapter 5.)
7. States have a right to demand compensation from tobacco companies for
the costs of treating smoking-related diseases under Medicaid. This
claim ignores the long-term savings traceable to smoking (see Myth #4)
and the tobacco taxes smokers already pay to cover the costs they
supposedly impose on others. And by the same logic, states could sue the
manufacturer of any product associated with disease or injury, including
alcoholic beverages, fatty foods, candy, firearms, swimming pols,
bathtubs, skateboards, and automobiles. The makers (and consumers) of
such products should not be blamed because politicians decided to pay
for health care with taxpayers' money. (See Chapter 6.)
8. The tobacco companies have been secretly manipulating the nicotine in
cigarettes to keep smokers hooked. Nicotine control was never a secret.
Several brands of denicotined cigarettes were introduced as early as the
1920s. Claims of reduced tar and nicotine have been conspicuous since
the 1950s, and the yields of each brand have been advertised since 1971.
The very idea of a consistent nicotine yield for a given brand implies
control, which cigarette manufacturers achieve through a variety of
methods that have long been discussed in trade journals, books, and
government reports. (See Chapter 7.)
9. Smoking is "a pediatric disease." Although most smokers start as
teenagers, the vast majority are, in fact, adults. And while it raises
the risk of certain illnesses, smoking itself is a behavior-something
people choose to do-not a disease. As then-Surgeon General C. Everett
Koop noted in his 1984 speech calling for "a smoke-free society,"
smoking "is a voluntary act: one does not have to smoke if one does not
want to." (See Chapter 7.)
10. Once people have started smoking, nicotine addiction prevents them
from stopping. This is so contrary to everyday experience that it's
amazing politicians and anti-smoking activists can say it with a
straight face. In fact, there are about as many former smokers in this
country as there are smokers, and almost all gave up the habit on their
own, without formal treatment-usually by quitting cold turkey. (See
Chapter 7.)

rereading my Pipelovers magazine (Feb., 1947) I found a picture on page
53 with a small article on Rem-Con and their new individuality. This

My name is Robert Donnelly, and have been a pipe Smoker for some 20+
years now, and smoke predominately Sasieni's, Barling's and
Dunhills. For some reason, although I have had the good fortune to buy
and smoke excellent vintage pipes from the start. I never really
concerned myself with nomenclature until recently; hard to believe I
know. I find it a fascinating study, and well worth the effort of any
serious smoker to address this issue in not only learning the history
of his/her pipes, but also to help with intelligent purchases in the
future. I was wondering, if any of you know of any Sasieni experts and
their email address's so that I may correspond with them? I am aware
of Stephen P. Smith and Michael Linder, but as I understand it Mr
Smith has left the pipe community and although I have contacted
Mr. Linder he has not responded. I would appreciate any help any of
you may be able to give me.

Well proof possitive that it does in fact take all kinds. While at my
local tobacco shop a few evenings past, two young women came in, one
to purchase pipe tobacco for her husband, and her companion just along
for the ride. The companion made a few remarks concerning the smell of
the place all the while holding her nose. She finally realized that a
few of the patrons were cigarette smokers, employees of other stores
in the mall who would rather come into the shop to smoke than go
outside. She lit her cigarette and joined the others in their
conversation still getting in the occasional jab at the smell of out
pipe and cigar smoke. (go figgure) The manager of the shop dropped
what he was doing and escorted her to the door. Yes friends, it does
take all kinds!
