Thanks for the heads up. I tried to email you about a month ago, but had
your old email address and a followup just slipped my mind. Sorry.
Tribute was a great success. Pipesmokers from all over the world can be
proud that they donated $31,150.00 to Familes of Freedom Scholarship
Fund. This is for beyond secondary education for familes of the 9/11
victims.
It is our intention to offer Tribute again in August and September of
this year and see if we can "sweeten the pot" a little more.

In regard to the ? on Jim Cooke. I saw him at the Corps show in
Oct/01. He had his surgery and has recovered enough to work on
beautiful pipes again. He s still in a significant amount of pain,
but he s able to work. I know he s very grateful to the pipe
community for what we all did for him.

Hi Steve,
I was reading the latest Pipes Digest with interest. It is not clear
if you send in a submission via this email or some other way. In
regards to Jim Cooke - yes he has recovered and can function. He
unfortunately will never return to quite 100% but if careful can
continue to make pipes for many years. I must say that his pipes made
today are truly great. Jim has greatly improved over the past several
years and his stem work and blasts are world class. After many years
of experimenting, Jim can finally bring the birdseye out to the same
degree as the straightgrain. Jim is really at his peak when he makes
pipes in the Dunhill group 5/6 range. I had an interesting time
meeting Danish pipemaker Tom Eltang when he visited NYC in early
November. Tom is known for his famous double stain - and it is quite
beautiful. I was able to facilitate having his pipes represented in
Arnold's tobacconist - a top pipe shop in NYC. This had been a
lifelong dream of Tom, to have his pipes displayed in a premier shop
in Manhattan and I am happy to have been a part of it. Tom brought
along for me the largest pipe he had ever made - a sleek smooth dublin
approximately 3" high with 3/4" walls. It was simply stamped "BIG"
and it is a great smoke. Let me know if this is the 'right way' to
submit info to you. I probably would like to contribute on a regular
basis. Thanks and keep up the good work. (Also do not release this

Dear Steve,
I'm sure many friends and followers of Julius Vesz's wonderful pipe work
will be interested to know the latest about him. As you may already know,
he suffered a mild heart attack during the last week of December. Heart
damage, according to son, Rob, was minor. However, I just spoke with Rob
again today (1/5/02) and he tells me that Julius was informed yesterday that
he'll need bypass surgery (triple for sure, perhaps quadruple). That is to
be done sometime this next week. Of course, after the surgery he is expected
to make a full and solid recovery and be back at work. In the meantime, Rob
is holding down Julius Toronto shop in the Royal York Hotel. Though not a
pipe maker himself, he is quite familiar with all details of running the
shop. I know all our thoughts and prayers will be with Julius and his family
during this period of surgery and recovery. He's a wonderful man.

Subject: North American Society of Pipe Collectors
Steve, please consider this the official announcement of the 2002
North American Society of Pipe Collectors swap/sell pipe show, to be
held on August 24. Last year's show sold out (and maxed out our
facility) at 93 tables, so this year we're moving to a new location,
which will hold at least 130 tables. Our new spot, which we really like
and which is working hard to make us welcome, is the Ramada Plaza Hotel
in Columbus, right off of I-71 for easy access. The reservation number
(special show rate) is 614-846-0300. Tables are just $45 for all
renters.
Again this year we will feature the Friday night members
hospitality suite, with all food and drink provided by NASPC, the hourly
raffle of a huge quantity of quality merchandise, and a good mix of pipe
makers, shops, and just plain folks with lots and lots of great pipes
and accessories.
We had huge crowds all day long last year, and we expect them again
this year. Your many readers can check out the show flyer (as well as
news about other shows) at our web site, www.naspc.org.
NASPC has just finished another successful year, with close to 850
members in all but two of the states and Canada. Note that NASPC is not
a club (we do not hold meetings) but, rather, a national association.
We published six professionally printed newsletters last year, all at
least 24 pages and a couple larger than that, and will do so again this
year. In addition to show news from around the country and much other
news, we printed a large number of interesting and meaty articles,
several of them rather controversial, such as Fred Hanna's "The Myth of
Brand and Maker in Pipe Smoking" that generated many thoughtful replies
from smokers and collectors around the country. As always, Marty
Pulvers continued to send us humerous and interesting reports of the
RTDA and his European trips.
NASPC dues remain at $12 per year--a real bargain--and we invite
anyone who is interested in a great reading experience six times a year
(as well as bargains like the NASPC Pipe of the Year and NASPC leather
pipe bags) to join us in 2002. Send checks to NASPC at PO Box 9642,
Columbus, OH 43209 to get all six newsletters. You don't have to be a
collector of high-grade pipes or to own a large number to be welcome as
a NASPC member. Our motto is "If you have one pipe you're a smoker. If
you have more than one, you're a collector." We welcome smokers and
collectors of every stripe.

I Have recently moved to Lewisville Tx "Suburb of Dallas" can anyone
tell me if there is a pipe club here In the Dallas Tx area? I have been
a member for a couple of years now and happy to see the membership
grow.I really appreciate all of the effort that you put into the
publication.I have been a pipe smoker for about 35 years and have went
through several phases of collecting and smoking pipes. I am currently
into the Rhodesian phase.
I have a question concerning the Rhodesian,I consider a true
Rhodesian to have much more mass to it than your typical Bulldog yet I
see many pipes listed as Rhodesians but to me appear to be Bulldogs.Is a
Bulldog also considered a Rhodesian? Just thought I would ask,I find a
true Rhodesian to be about the best,coolest smoke there is.

Steve; No apology necessary. I apologize for not getting the info to you
with enough lead time. In the future, I'll try to do that. We had a nice
show, with Bjarne Nielsen not only one of the most experienced and
knowledgeable of pipe men, but one of the most sociable. He loves to talk to
pipe smokers, so he makes the shop he's in a joy of a place to be.
Just received an e-mail from Teddy Knudsen, and he apparently plans to
be in the shop with some of his wonderful high grades Nov. 12-14. His pipes
are expensive, but for the select few who can afford and appreciate them,
there's no better pipemaker out there.

Hi! I am a collector of Native American Artifacts. Once while
hunting for Indian Artifacts, I came across a tiny tiny pipe. It
appears to be functional, however about the size of two quarters
laying together. It is made of a fine black clay, with random scratch
designs on the bowl. It was found in Central North Carolina by me. I
have sent it to every native artifacts expert I can find, and while
they all confirm that it is VERY old, they have no clue as to its
origin or use. If anyone might have any information regarding such a

Subject: Tobacco for the Dead [For the Pipes Digest]
My wife practices the traditional Vietnamese custom of making offerings to
the spirits of dead relatives in the hope that they will watch over and
protect the living. Usually these offerings take the form of food, but they
took a peculiar turn when Marie started making offerings to the spirit of
Jung, who passed away in Marie's neighborhood when he was ten. When Marie
makes offerings to Jung, she sets out a dish of icecream, a chocolate bar
and a lit cigarette. If I understand correctly, this boy was smoking
cigarettes before he died at age 10. I know that the Vietnamese have a
relaxed attitude about tobacco, but I still find this a bit surprising.
Still, his mother asked that a cigarette be a part of Jung's offering, so
Marie lights a cigarette and puts it on a plate.
Unfortunately, this couldn't be done for deceased pipe smokers as pipe
tobacco self extinguishes. I guess we'll just have to smoke the pipe when
we honor the deceased.

I was just there this week and bought a can of Tribute. I will open it in
celebration on the day we have justice.
"Tribute" aside, Smokers Paradise is a jewel of a shop if people haven't
been there. They have an excellent cigar humidor and an excellent selection
of pipes ranging from meerschaum to high grade Italian pipes to various
English brands, and even several different models of Kirsten. There
selection of tobacco leaves nothing to be desired and even includes
twist/rope tobacco.

Steve I believe his name was, in the last Pipes Digest mentioned that
he had acquired several pipes including a Dunhill which he said he
found in a coffee can at a flea market after years of smoking Dr
Grabows, and is now sold on the better quality pipes for obvious
reasons. His question dealt with the fact that one of his pipes is
devekoping a hole in the stem area. Now I had heard of a method a
tried without success of mixing epoxy and ground down stem material to
cover any holes. It actually doesn't dry black as it was stated when I
fisrt heard about this and didn't hold. So I would suggest a couple of
alternatives, one being of having a replacement stem made by a
professional, or depending on how handy you are to cut the stem where
the hole is and re-shape it. I have done this with several of my pipes
that were purchased through estate sales and rather than discarding a
perfectly good stem because of a hole or chipped end I simply used my
dremel tool to saw the end off and reshaped it, and can't tell the
difference. Well I assume by this time he has found a cure for his
problem but others who may share the same problem, and if you dontwant
to buy a replacement stem this is another option but certainly not the
only one.

In response to Dr. Michael Clow-
My understanding of the Harcourt brand is that they were made in the Preben
Holm factory in Denmark. I believe Harcourt was at one time exclusively
sold through Dunhill stores, and were the manufacturers of the Danish-style
Dunhill straightgrains that were manufactured in the 1970s and early 1980s
to keep with the current market trends.
As for Soren, I believe that was an independent company.

In a paper, a student said that he smoked 3 pipes of tobacco in his robe
after watching a Sherlock Holmes movie in the morning BEFORE class.
I was under the impression that a pipe of tobacco lasts for a very long
time - at least an hour.
So about how long DOES a pipe of tobacco, generally, last?

Hi Steves and fellow pipesters:
Got a Barling in September. Great smoker! Started with a
half-bowl; that ended the break-in. Adds a hint of chocolate to the
tobacco (it's a very-dark-stained pot with 3/8" walls).
Now I'm real curious. The nomenclature is like this (hope it
comes out right):
On the stem, the word BARLING vertical and horizontal,
crossed at the L:

On the side of the shank, a line of script ("Barling") and
two lines of different-sized block caps ("LONDONENGLAND" and
"VINTAGE"), (of equal length in the orig.):

And, on the bottom of the shank: 6275.
It seems to me that vintage items are not usually labelled as
such. But the pipe is such a look-forward-to smoke that I'm just
interested in all the detail I can gather (including value, though,
obviously, I'm not looking to sell it).
Noted that a pipe magazine recently published an article on
Barling nomenclature. Visited the web site and it required a
subscription to get the info. If I have to I'll do it, but I really
don't need more paper coming at me. So I thought I'd ask here. Any
info will be appreciated.

Hi Steve,
We were searching on Google for some information and found your site. We
have a little item that we think is maybe a pipe cleaner? It came from the
estate of a family friend who smoked pipes. The pipes weren't included! Not
knowing much about pipes, we were hoping someone could help us. It's about 2
inches long and 1/2 an inch at the widest part. It looks like a grater or
rasp on the bottom and the top handle is kind of like a wind-up key. It is
marked with GBD in a circle on both sides, has a patent number on one side
and made in England on the other.
We would be most appreciative if you could give the clueless a clue!

Dear pipe friends...After a 20 year absence form pipe smoking I picked
up a favorite old briar (from a crumpled brown paper sack in the
garagr), bought a pouch of Sir Walter Raleigh at Safeway and
rediscovered the contentment of smoking my pipe. So you don't
conclude from my choice of tobacco that I sit arround watching
Lawrence Welk retrospectives (the Lovly Little Lennon Sisters have
filed for Social Security and Norma Zimmer looks like she could go out
with King Tut...actually I have watched these shows as much as I could
take-maybe 5 min-but then I also slow down to see accidents on the
freeway)I have settled on the following blends. I always have a
cavendish going and my current favorite is Lane 1Q which provides me
clouds of sweet, cool smoke, and a black cavendish. I also like
latakia blends and went through a tin of Dunhill Durbar which is
quality stuff but a little light. 965 was too strong so I'll try
Standard Mixture Mild. For years I smoked a mixture called Mr Beau frm
the Smoker's Den in Glendale,Ca, now long closed. I'd love to have
that again if anyone knows where to get it. When this gets to be a
little much I fall back to good old cool, mild, boring burley and will
try C&D Morley's Best because of good reviews on this site. Now my
questions: what do I have to pay for a really good smokeing pipe?
I've read the posts from guys that smoked Kaywoodie and Graybow for
years and then found a Dunhill Shell briar at a garage sale for three
bucks and went straight to heaven smokeing it. I'm not going to spend
$200 for a pipe....are the Dunhill second line (Parker and Hardcastle)
as good a smoker as the regular lines? Is there a good source for
these or other quality pipes that aren't as recognized? And does
anyone have any experience with the Striker pipes advertised in Pipe
and Tobacco? They claim an 18-38" of draw due to a patented stem with
baffles in it and that it smokes so cool that the tobacco tastes much
better. Don't they slurp up with all that plumbing in the stem? I
have several pipes including a Barling straight pot shape that an old
girlfriend gave me and it is a favorite along with a GBD half bent
apple and a few others. If there's really and advantage to a pipe
that costs over $100 let me know and thanks for reading this. One
last thing...can anyone send me their spare 8-track of Myron Florin
playing "Flight of the Bumble Bee"? Just kidding...Paul

I have heard some negative comments on the salt and alcohol sweetening
method and would like some to hear this groups comments.
Some have stated that you run the risk of cracking the bowl if the
salt soaks into the briar and re-crystalizes. I have been told the
salt serves no function other than keeping the alcohol in the bowl and
soaking up the gunk.
Would some other materal such as clean sand or cotton serve the
purpose as well? These materials were suggested to me by someone who
saw them on a message board somewhere.
The only part of this I am not so sure about is getting all the
material out of the bowl when finished. Comments??????

[Since salt doesn't dissolve in alcohol, I would think sand should
probably work just as well, if not better, and shouldn't be any more
difficult to get out of the bowl than salt is. A more absorbent
material like cotton should work better still, if the salt really
plays no role. On the other hand, almost any alcohol you can buy
contains enough water to dissolve some of the salt, so maybe the salt
does serve some function. There's only one way to find out -- get some
clean play sand or cotton and experiment, preferably on a not too
favored pipe! -S.]

Subject: ASP logo
Hi, Steve!
I'm the guy who designed the ASP logo. I thought some of the ASP
people might like having a copy of the logo for websites, printed
materials, tee shirts or desktop background. I made three different
versions of the logo: a 3-D style rendering of the tobacco tin, a
circular (like the tin label) version in color and a black-and-white
version. I would be happy to make them available to ASP, my only
concern is that it not be used by a business as a supposed endorsement
from ASP. On the other hand, using it for NG-related items, such as
the club pipe and tampers, is fine.
I've got a couple of Cafe Press websites selling shirts and mugs with
the ASP logo on them, so I'm not against capitalism. I just don't
want the logo to be used to imply an endorsement that does not exist.
If you can follow my tortured logic.
Let me know if you think this is appropriate and if you have space on
the pipes.org website to make the graphics available.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me the history of a pipe that has
recently come into my posession. It was made by the ropp company in
france and is called Le Grand. I know this much by reading the words
on the briar. I was wondering if anyone could tell me how old this
pipe is and what its value might be.

I've been smoking a few more cigar lately as one of the guys I teach
with is a cigar fiend. I've been to a couple of cigar events at the
Thunderbird in Tacoma and the last one was with Perdomo. They were quite
good but haven't had a chance to smoke the fresh and rolled jobs the
roller was making in the store. I had to junk the old Volvo and got a
new Discovery so my wife won't let me smoke in the Rover. It means more
trips to the smoke shop. I got a nice Charatan brown blast off of ebay
recently and that's about it from here. I hope all is well and good
smokin...

i could use some help. for a long time i have been trying to find
info on producing pipe tobacco. i have found a lot of info on growing
tobacco but not on making it into pipe tobacco. it seems that all the
tobacco growing pages and seed sellers do not know anything about
making pipe tobacco. if you have any info on this or what books might
have this info please let me know, i would appreciate it a lot.
