a BURNING question...

what style of pipe did you get? what type of tobacco did you try?

Bear in mind that, one doesn't puff a pipe, one sips a pipe! Puffing a pipe rewards one with bite, sipping a pipe rewards one with flavour.

First and foremost, you are not doing anything "wrong", you are merely doing something different, and respectively, ahieving a different result. I'm smoking a pipe since 1965, and burning your mouth is common. The most importantant of factors I have found are: A) The pipe must be very clean. B) Back off on the load you are putting in the pipe bowl, by half. C) Relax! D) Get the source of flame away from the pipe as soon as you go "smoke on". E) Stop trying to put out a smoke screen big enough to cover a battleship, in three minutes. Gently sip, the whisp of smoke, for truly flavorful results. F) Keep the pipe smoking relatively cool to your touch. If the pipe feels hot to your hand, guess what it will do to your throat and mouth? G) Let your pipe cool, dead-cold, before refilling and smoking anew. Rotate with another pipe. H) Permit the pipe to air dry, thoroughly for a day or two. I) If your pipe is covered in shellac or varnish, yuck! Briar should be seasoned, and the first thing you will do, is to use 0000-grade steel wool to knock off all the shellac and varnish. I have my own finishing methods, taught to me by pipemakers, all of whom, incidently did not believe in anything by way of a finish (the old timers used to say, "Pipes are like a beautiful woman, best when they are sucked on when they're naked"), but I like Midnight finish, in Handrubbed Oil. That too, will taste cruddy until it burns off and seasons, and the briar is able to sweat and breath freely. Hope this was of some help to you. Best of luck to you.

OK heres what i've learned about "TONGUE BITE" it is a chemical burn to the tongue, can do some pretty good dammage if you keep at it, . if you smoke too hard you can leave a chemical burn on the tongue, you must use a clean pipe., prefferably one that has been properly "broken in:", and you must use a pipe cleaner between bowls to remove the liquid tar from the pipe, if you dont then your gonna get bit. the tar heats up, and delivers a whallop on the tayste buds, and what ever you do dont try to drink an acidic drink like lemonaide while enjoying a pipe yourr gonna get bit hard, brush your teeth , maintain good oral hygiene, and clean your pipe, OH and take it easy on a new tobbacco, you cant just switch from a candy assed cavandish to latakia or Virginia over night learn the strengths of your tobaccos and you will love to tayste the differences... a cavandish might smell like chocholate, but if puffed too hard its gonna tayste like ass.. and keep your pipe seasoned with a non iodized salt cure, and celaned with a alchohol spirit, (rum), or if obtainable (EVERCLEAR) just a little dab will do ya, on a pipe cleaner wet goes in the next dry one to come out. let sit for one to two days, the "CAKE" that builds up in the bowl acts as a protectant to the inside of the pipe from fire dammage, theres sugar in tobbacco, when smoked the sugar builds up in that cake the hotter it gets it can seep into your bowl, and when it cools down can actually expand and crack the bowl,, be careful dont burn too hot, a properly packed bowl should last 45minuted to 1 hour. practice on a missouri meerchaum cheapy then go to a big boy pipe. "I RECOMEND A PETERSON SYSTEM" for the reason of its a great pipe., and also the mouth piece aims teh smoke to the roof of your mouth not across the tongue, circulate between the different styles and use whats best for you... the price of a pipe does not reflect the smokability.. a DR Drabo 20buck pipe can burn out just as easy as a 200 Dollar mario grandi... learn to use your tools to properly clean your pipes. and you will have fun doing so good luck and smoke on!!!

more likely than not it is the type of tobacco that you are smoking. experiment with some of the English blends that are not as apt to cause tongue bite. i suggest the Mcllelands Frog Morton series because there are several different ones to choose from, none of which seem to be problem with bite. my favorite is Frog Morton On The Bayou.
