Breaking in a new pipe…

I recently took up pipe-smoking again after a 30 year lay-off. I used to smoke a pipe when I lived in the UK, but more or less gave up after moving to the USA in 1983. I still have my collection of pipes (mostly Kapp-Peterson) which I recently rediscovered whilst going through some boxes after a move. I found a brand new un-used Peterson System-317 which I thought I’d christen, and from the depths of my memory came the fact a coating of honey on the inside of the bowl of a brand-new pipe will enhance and speed up the formation of a carbon layer in the bowl. A few smokes later seem to verify this interesting tip. (Mac Baren “latakia blend” tobacco, for the new pipe, by the way!) – Wil Davis (NH)

a BURNING question…

So I’m a new pipe-smoker and have a question. I’ve learned how to pack a pipe, light it, keep it lit, all that important stuff. My problem is that my mouth is getting burned! Would this be the result of a poor pipe, the tobacco, user error, etc? It’s put a bit of a damper on my first pipe smoking experience and I know that there wouldn’t be so many pipe-enthusiasts out there if it meant cooking your taste buds off. Some help would be incredibly appreciated!
