Tobacco reviews top twenty lists

Because I have the tools and the interest, I grabbed the data from the excellent http://www.tobaccoreviews.com/ site and created tables for the top twenty blends in term of number of reviews, overall rating, and how many people specified a blend as their favorite. As always, be care with the data — some highly rated blends have only a single review for instance. Here are the tables. First, sorted by number of reviews.

A tale of two pipes

I recently ordered two very different pipes from our friends at Pipes and Cigars. One was a “Fantasy Freehand Natural” http://www.pipesandcigars.com/pipes/87088/fantasy-freehand-natural/ and one a Stanwell Brushed Brown 243 http://www.pipesandcigars.com/pipes/83390/stanwell-brushed-brown-pipes/ I like them both, even if they are so different. The freehand is a much larger pipe as evidenced by these photos, and takes an 9mm filter (which I tend to avoid) or an adapter (which I tend to use). Also as evidenced by the photos, the bores are almost identical. I’ve smoked the Stanwell, and it’s a very nice smoke as Stanwells tend to be. As it has thinner walls, one does want to smoke slowly and not in a brisk breeze.

Tobacco Beetle

IMG_0324

This was a first for me. I lit a really tasty cigar, but the draw was terrible. I could tell there was a really good taste underlying what I was getting, which was mostly air. After taken both bands off, I spotted an almost perfectly round hole on one side, you can see it the picture above. The hole was hidden under one of the bands, though I’ll guess this wasn’t intentional. Covering it up with a finger made everything good, though my finger did get a bit hot. Thought I’d share in case someone else has a similar, initially perplexing situation.

Best butane refill for me

IMG_0127

These “LAL” butane refills work by far the best for me; others just don’t seem to do the job. I like both that I can see the butane emptying, and the metal filler tube. Bought 20 from amazon at http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005L7888I/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1  Two flames, pun intended.

Avaniti Anisette

Guilty secret: I really like http://avanticigar.com/ Anisette cigar. I don’t like the Mocha’s. I don’t usually like flavored cigars… I also love the De Nobili line. They are the very best small cigar I’ve found. Much better than many more prestigious larger cigars. Two flames.

A new blog for me…

Hi all. I’ve been running this site for a long time now, and I think we’ve stabilized on using WordPress, so I thought I’d start writing content again instead of doing nothing but system administration. If you’d like your own section to blog on, just let me know. My vision is that anyone can have a blog here, as long as the topics are of general interest, and we can all learn from each other. Thanks for visiting!
