How it began for me

I decided I should do a little Pipe Logging (PLOGing) and share some stories from my pipe life. My pipe smoking and the creation of pipes.org practically coincided. First the story of the beginnings of my pipe smoking, then how pipes.org came to be.

When I started, I had essentially no background in pipes. No one in my family smoked and indeed smoking in general was frowned upon. In 1993, I started work for Cray Computer writing compilers for Cray 3’s and 4’s. That was a ton of fun! Moved to Colorado Springs and was in an apartment there for a month alone. It’s never good to leave me alone… I was in the Citadel mall one evening after work, and for no reason I can fathom, I walked into the Stag Tobacco shop that was there at the time. I walked out with a Barontini pipe (pictured here), a Chech pipe tool, and a mild tobacco. Ended up liking what turned out to be a store-branded McClelland Bulk #110. Took me quite a while to get the pipe smoking drill down pat — I didn’t have a mentor and there the web was still nascent. That leads into the next story I’ll write: how pipes.org came to be.

I for one would be very interested in the upcoming "PLOG" as I have enjoyed viewing this site for a long time. More data, please.
