Welcome to the new(est) pipes.org!

This site has been around in one incarnation or another since September, 1994.  Originally, I did everything by hand, using only ‘vi’ and ‘make’ for Unix aficionados.  In circa 2004, I moved the site to a content management system (CMS) as the amount of data had grown to large for me to manage manually.  Well, that CMS is no longer actively used or supported, so I installed WordPress and am in the process of moving everything to it.  I’m hoping to expand the topics and contributions from you (there are over 5,000 registered users!)  So, please contribute where you can.  If there is something you’d like to see, let me know.  Thanks for all your support through the years!

Well, I’m not too happy with the “new look”. I only recently joined (as Wil Davis) about a week ago, very pleased to have found such a useful site (having been a pipe-smoker for the past 50 years), and left a couple of comments, and today I tried to log in to see if there were any new replies and found that the system didn’t recognize my password, or my e-mail when I tried to reset the pwd. So I re-registered. The new interface is hardly intuitive, in fact I would say t he new system is about as “useful as a one-legged-man at and arse-kicking contest” . Great idea, but sadly very badly implemented! Byeeee! “CLICK”

Sorry you feel that way. I’m happy to hear from anyone who has suggestions as to how to improve this site. Yes, there will be a glitch or two during the transition such as having to request a new password. There really isn’t an option but to move away from the previous CMS. I hope most people will understand and help make things better.

As a quick followup: Wil’s comments were lost the day of the actual migration. My bad. Had to pull the trigger some day. My apologies.

Thanks for the reply, as you can see I’m still trying to make it work, BTW my original account was done with a username of Wil Davis, is there any chance of recovering my posts? Thanks in advance!

Wil — I’ll be looking today. I don’t think the posts are gone, just misplaced. I was able to recover some replies from years ago, so give me a day or so. Thanks.

Wil: I found the post from the 30th and posted it. Can you check to see if it’s as you want? Thanks!

I lke the new page even with the inevitable kinks that need to get worked out when migrating.

What about a link to the forums? I don’t see it on the new home page. Would be a shame to see that die because no one can find it.

Hi, I just tried to add a post to the “Maintenance” thread, and was told I didn’t have the privileges to add to that thread, and that my username/password was wrong, so I’ve just spent the past 45 mins trying to reset my password. All to no effect, unfortunately! I’m not quite sure what I’m doing wrong! Thanks in advance for any help! – Wil Davis

Wil — I just ‘became’ you and was able to submit a post in the maintenance section for review. At the top of the page it said “Post submitted. Preview post”. What are you seeing? Thanks!

…after I fill in the text of the post, it show a pre-filled in ‘username’ and ‘password’ field, and when I click on ‘preveiw/post message’ it show an error indicating ‘Error
Your username/password combination was invalid, or you do not have permission to post to this topic. You may revise your username and password using the form at the bottom of this page. ‘ and when I try and revise the username and password it shows me the same error. – Wil

Definitely an issue here. So, you can’t retrieve your password? Let’s get that fixed first. I just tried and it worked for me. Let me know. Thanks!

It will let me post here, and I just changed my password (OK, I think…), but I still get the error (previously described) when I try posting to the “maintenance” forum. (?????) – Thanks for trying – Wil

I just tried again, and noticed that the URL to the forum to which I’m trying to post is “http://forum.pipes.org/messages/25/44681.html?1289961695”, and it fails with the previous message. Whereas this forum is “http://pipes.org/welcome-to-the-newest-pipes-org/#comment-130”, IOW the first part of the URL is different, and I’m wondering if that might be part of the problem??? – Wil

Wil — yep, that’s the issue. At this point, the fora and the main page are running on two different systems :/ I’m working on migrating them too so that everything is integrated. For the time being, if you want to post there, you’ll have a create a log in there too. Confusing, I know… Thanks!

Well, each time I get a little further! I’ve re-registered with forum.pipes.org, and was sent an e-mail confirming this, and now when I try to post a message, I get the reply: “Suspended Account – You have recently requested that your e-mail address be changed to the address indicated below. When you did this, a confirmation message was sent to your new e-mail address with an activation key. Enter the activation key below to enable your account” I’m still waiting for the activation code… (sigh!)

Wel — thanks so much for your persistence! I see what you’re seeing and I’ll beat on it until it works. The email system now appears broken. :/ Well, nothing is ever easy, but I do firmly believe that the site will be much better heading in to the future due to your efforts. Thanks again.

Wil — I believe I’ve fixed the forum’s email problem. Please try again to register/recover your password. The fix should work until the entire forum is migrated; I’ll post when that will happen. Thanks!
