[SPECIAL ISSUE] This is a special announcement of interest to the pipe
smoking community, for a nonprofit relief effort for the September 11
World Trade Center disaster.

The sponsors of this relief are Craig Tarler and Gregory Pease, who
should be known to most of the regular readers of the Digest. I
believe that this should be of immediate interest to all pipe smokers
and their friends.

All other submissions I have received since Digest #276 will be
published in the next regular issue.

Please pray for the innocent victims of this tragedy.

				     Smoke in peace,
				     ~\U Steve.

Subject: Tobacco blend for WTC relief

The catastrophe that occurred in New York last week weighs heavily on
everyone's mind, and we all want to help in some way. Pipesmokers may
have a way to make their support for the relief efforts felt.

"Tribute" is a new tobacco blend designed to be marketed with all
profits going to WTC relief funds. The tobacco will sell for
$12/tin-not inexpensive, but of that $12, somewhere between $10 and
$11 (numbers are still being crunched) will go to one of the
foundations being set up to help the families of the many victims of
the New York disaster. There has already been impressive support from
retailers, most of whom have offered to sell as much of the tobacco as
they can at zero profit.

Tribute will consist of all-American tobaccos. The recipe, from Gregory
Pease who is making the tobacco, includes red and stoved red Virginias,
lemon Virginia, perique, and a little unflavored, toasted black
Cavendish.

The blend will be a somewhat limited edition, available only until
December 1st, 2001, available directly from Cornell & Diehl (call
800-433-0080, or email ???????????).

The tobacco for this blend has been donated by Altadis and by Tobacco
Services Inc. Manufacturers Cornell & Diehl and G L Pease will absorb
much of the cost involved in development and manufacture. A printer
has volunteered to provide labels at his cost, donating his time to
the project. A shipping materials supplier will be providing boxes at
very close to cost.

Delivery should be available within three weeks. Pre-orders are being
taken now.

The goal is to raise at least $50,000 by the December 1st cutoff date.
This is a chance for pipesmokers everywhere to band together and make
a significant contribution.

Pipes and Tobaccos magazine will be promoting this special cause on
its Web site and in the upcoming winter issue.

NOTE: In the first two days we have had over 1,000 tins subscribed.
We're shooting for 5,000. There is a 4 tin offer for $50 including
s&h. We will ship outside the USA at postage cost. We encourage all
our friends to contact their tobacconist and "sell" this effort. Have
them call for details, please.
