Subject: Changing of the guard

First and foremost, this list has changed hands. Dr. Steve Masticola
simply does not have time to moderate any more. The list has passed from
his capable hands to mine, which are shaking at the prospect. Personally,
I have learned much through the years from the digest and did not want to
see it disappear. A lot has certainly changed from the time the digest
started and the 'net connects many pipe smokers through different venue.
Nonetheless, I believe the digest can play an important role and I will
strive to keep it in tact. As before, under my watch it will remain
moderated, text-only email list, published about every 30 days. This
approach seems to mirror pipe smoking itself: a high quality, more slowly
paced endeavor. Not that I am in any way opposed to instantaneous
worldwide communication -- as some of you know, I work on the pipes.org
site too.

There will be several digests sent in rapid succession at the start to
clear out the backlog. I will try to keep the digest format as it always
has been including keeping it text-only. No doubt there will be a few
glitches starting this up on a new system, I ask for your patience during
the process.

I heartily recommend you write Steve Masticola (??????????????????) and
thank him for his years of dedication to all of us. Without his
assistance, I might not have ever enjoyed the whole pipe smoking
experience; I would guess many of you can say the same thing. Everytime I
enjoy a bowl, I think of Steve and the others who have made pipe smoking an
integral part of my life.

Subject: Pipes Digest - message formating

The message formating of my last 2 volumes (11 & 12) was all messed up on
my e-mail. They were full of all kinds of computer code gobbel-de-goop
about message ids, return paths, MIME versions, content types, META
content, etc. What gives? An I the only member with this problem?

What happened to the Pipes Web page? http://pipes.org takes you to a
different site, that was nothing whatsoever to do with smoking pipes.

Subject: some smokers' trivia

Hello Everyone.
There is a bit of smokers' humor in the video, "A Grand Day Out", a Wallace
and Grommit clay animation film.
Wallace strikes a match on a box. The box has the green and yellow color
scheme of our beloved "Swan Vestas", but the brand name on the box is "Duck".
For anyone watching carefully, it's quite wonderful.

Hello,
I just received the latest Pipes Digest and, woohoo, thank goodness
they're going out again. I look forward to future ones.

One request though, after finding a large part of this last one
unreadable: please do not send HTML format text to list. For those of us
using text-based news readers it just makes the digest unreadable. Let me
know if I'm out of line on this request, but traditionally email digest
lists are always text-formated rather than HTML.

Thanks,

---------------

Hello from Columbus, OH. I work part-time at a Tinderbox here, and our
manager Mike Spicer can take care of you including the shipping. He is
listed as the pipe guru on the TB homepage. here is his e-mail :

I have only exhibited at two shows, but have attended more than a few. I
hate to say this, but the critical time seems to be just before the show
opens to the public! Have the table attended at all times, even during
set-up and take-down. If you don't have someone there with you, coffee
breaks, the inevitable subsequent p-breaks, and wanting to see the show as
well as exhibit will make you vulnerable.

Subject: Peterson Lip (Re: "dental" tip on non-Peterson pipes?)

I'm glad to see the Digest mailing again. I've been just reading it the
past few issues but now I decided to send a post.

In regards to the question from Matthew Lu on the Peterson Lip, I must
say that I too prefer it to the standard bit. But, unfortunately for
those of us who like it, it's a Peterson invention and the real version
is only to be found on Peterson pipes. I have seen some knock-off
designs, but none worked as well as the original. Usually the actual
position of the hole is changed from the top to the end. In profile the
copy still looks like Peterson bit but it smokes just like a regular
bit. I say just stick with a real Peterson. It's a good quality pipe
that tends to be very affordable. And if you absolutely must be able to
say that your pipe cost an arm & a leg, then buy one of the Peterson
special pipes such as the Year Pipe or a Sherlock Holmes 7 day set.

Subject: A Cigar Story

I got this from another mailing list. I have no idea if it is true or
not (despite the claims in the text itself) but it is simply too
hilarious to pass by. Enjoy, and have a Merry Christmas and a Peaceful
New (Smoking) Year!

-begin forwarded text-

A Charlotte, NC, lawyer purchased a box of very rare and expensive
cigars, then insured them against fire among other things. Within a
month, having smoked his entire stockpile of these great cigars and
without yet having made even his first premium payment on the policy,
the lawyer filed claim against the insurance company. In his claim,
the lawyer stated the cigars were lost "in a series of small fires."
The insurance company refused to pay, citing the obvious reason: that
the man had consumed the cigars in the normal fashion.

The lawyer sued...and won!

In delivering the ruling the judge agreed with the insurance company
that the claim was frivolous. The Judge stated nevertheless, that the
lawyer held a policy from the company in which it had warranted that
the cigars were insurable and also guaranteed that it would insure
them against fire, without defining what is considered to be
unacceptable fire, and was obligated to pay the claim. Rather than
endure lengthy and costly appeal process, the insurance company
accepted the ruling and paid $15,000 to the lawyer for his loss of the
rare cigars lost in the "fires."

NOW FOR THE BEST PART... After the lawyer cashed the check, the
insurance company had him arrested on 24 counts of ARSON!!!! With his
own insurance claim and testimony from the previous case being used
against him, the lawyer was convicted of intentionally burning his
insured property and was sentenced to 24 months in jail and a $24,000
fine.

This is a true story and was the 1st place winner in the recent
Criminal Lawyers Award Contest.

Hi Guys,

I was wondering if anyone had any information on the following pipe:

It is a smooth Charatans Belvedere with the following nomenclature: "Charatans Make London England Belvedere", the other side is stamped "N114DC"

Cheers,
Paul
