Subject: Professor's pipe sweetening treatment

Hi,

It was in the mid 1960's that I either discovered or came up with the
Professor's Pipe Sweetening Treatment using salt and Everclear. At age
62, the memory is not a sharp as it used to be may need the salt
treatment itself. Out of the hundreds of pipes I have sweetened with
this treatment, I have never had one crack and none of my friends have
reported that one had cracked. I have begun to suspect an old wives
tale has emerged regarding cracking and the treatment. For what reason,
I do not know. Maybe the pipe was going to crack anyway. Who knows. At
each pipe show I have attended over the past 27 years, I passed out free
directions on using the treatment correctly and no one has ever said
anything detrimental about the treatment after they tried it. From
years of experience, I can testify that it is the finest way to sweeten
a pipe compared to the many methods and curatives that I have tried over
the years. I hope that my felow briar friars will follow the directions
and give the treatment a fair try. The results to me over the years
have been fantastic.

Best wishes to all...................................

Fellow Briar Friar,

Dennis "The Professor" Congos

I am a long time pipe smoker who would like to get started in pipe repair. It used to be pipe repair was somewhat common. Now with the political correctness of frowning upon smokers, we have lost all of our good pipe repair shops here in Pittsburgh. So my request to you would be to assist me in obtaining theory and technique instruction and sources for pipe parts. I am a professional tradesman and am very good with my hands, so I know that I possess the mechanical skills needed. If anyone can help me with this venture, suggesting books or techniques, please feel free to email me at ??????????????????? Thanks very much.

Hello Steve,

I have been reading the digests, starting with those written back in the 1980s, and
have been enjoying them. I am an infrequent smoker; I enjoy a pipe 2-3 times a month.
Right now I have about 8 pipes, all of them cheap, one of them a corncob I made myself.
It is hard to find good pipes and tobacco here in Changchun, Jilin Pr., China, where I
live. However, China has its own unique (yet dying) tradition of pipe smoking. In the
near future, I would like to research this tradition and share my discoveries with the
whole group of readers.

Darren

Subject: Anti-smoke act in Italy

OK... so we finally have our anti-smoke law, here in Italy. From what
I read in the papers, it is the most restrictive in the whole of
Europe.

Since January 11th it is virtually impossible to smoke indoors, with
the sole exception of private houses. Restaurants, bars etc. need to
have separate areas for smokers, with air-filtering devices that treat
a given quantity of air per hour. In lack thereof, no smoking is
permitted.

The same applies to offices, where separate rooms for smokers must be
set up; in lack of such rooms, smoking is only permitted outdoors.

I received this law with mixed feelings. On one side, I positively
loathe cigarette smoke, not so much out of health considerations
(although I lost both my parents to lung cancer) but of the fact that
cigarette smoke turns my stomach. To put it very effectively, if
someone lights a cigarette within the reach of my nostrils, it has the
same effect as if this person removed his/her shoes and shoved a foot
under my nose.

So I was very happy of a legislation that will allow me to go out with
my wife, spend the evening in a pub or a restaurant, and go back home
without reeking of cigarette smoke.

On the other hand I am a pipe smoker, and I enjoy the occasional
cigar, so being prevented from smoking indoors is a bit of a nuisance
for me. I cannot even smoke at work, although I do not share a room
with anybody (as a manager in my company I am entitled to a single
room), because I don't have the prescribed air exhaust system, and the
company of course is not going to install it just for my sake.

But apart from this, I would like to understand what it's like to be a
pipe smoker in a country where smoking has been socially banned for a
long time. I mean, from what I see in TV (I have never been there) in
the US smoking bears the stigma of social unacceptability. Low-budget
and low-IQ TV shows will cast the villain as a chain-smoker; a
cigarette on the lips of a character is often used by dimwitted
screenplay authors as a simple but blatant token of negativity.

What is it like with pipes and cigars? are pipe and cigar smokers
considered just as bad, in the eye of the public?
