Hello All,
I appreciated reading the descriptions of when a couple of you like to smoke.
I don't smoke indoors, so I'm limited by the weather conditions about 20
minutes West of the District of Columbia.
I like to smoke when I have absolutely nothing else to do. I wait days or
weeks until I really have a hankering for a pipe, then I indulge. I like to
feel as though it is really a luxury, something to be savored, rather than the
idea that I "need" tobacco.
I kick back, look up at the trees, enjoy a light breeze. Life is good.
More another time,

This is a multi-part message in MIME format.

Interest purely as a collector of pipes, but with the draconian laws =
coming into effect in United Kingdom, considering taking it up just to =
spite them.
Having a website, www.smokingmetal.info, wondering if anyone of the =
members can add any to the history of this genre of pipe. I guess many =
would only be known to the older generation of pipe smokers. I know =
Falcon, Kirsten and Viking are going strong though.

For medical reasons, I have been forced to give up smoking my pipes
and cigars. I have about 85 pipes to get rid of. I would like some
advice on how best to do it. I live in Bowie, MD, for anyone who
lives close by. My phone number is (301) 262-8076. Cheers, BMF

Subject: Where to smoke

I have been subscribing to this digest for about ten years now, and if
memory serves this subject has popped up every now and then.

I usually smoke at home or at work; officially smoking indoors is
banned here in Italy, except at your own home, but as usual we take
regulations ...the Italian way :o)

I have been regularly bashed over the head with the second-hand smoke
issue; I am no medical man, however I have made my own, independent
research and I have concluded that this is a "religious" issue.
Whenever I have tried to put forth the suggestion that second-hand
smoke may be no more dangerous than city smog, in fact it may be much
less harmful, and that it is all a hoax, I have always met with wild,
hysterical reactions.

So I don't care, I smoke in the presence of my wife and children (four
thereof: ages 16, 13, 12 and 9) and they really dote on the scent of
my English mixtures.

Of course I also smoke outdoors; seeing someone walking around with a
stem in his teeth (women NEVER smoke pipes here in Italy) is not too
common but it happens.

I NEVER smoke in my car. I quit smoking cigarettes back in 1987 when I
was 30; the smell (stench?) of cigarette smoke bothers me very much,
thank you. At the time I used to smoke in my car, and it reeked. I
have tried to smoke my pipe in the car once, and after a half-hour
drive, with the pipe always going, I left the car, then I went back
and ...yeeecch! the car stank as if I had smoked a bar of 200
cigarettes instead of a healthy bowlful of 965. So I never lit my pipe
in the car again.

On another side, cigar smoking (the "Toscano", Kentucky-based typical
Italian cigar) has become quite trendy here in Italy in the last
decade. It used to be the favourite smoke of the poorest; now
politicians, top management, and other snobbish types, will be seen
with a cigar in their lips, and will often bear the required
paraphernalia, such as fashionable leather pocket-cigar-cases and
fancy cigar-cutters. Among the lay people there seems to be no
half-way: non-smokers will either love the scent of the Toscano or
hate the stink. I follow the former; however I rarely enjoy a cigar
myself, because for some funny reason I cannot endure a full cigar, it
makes me sick about half way through. No, of course I don't inhale it,
however I have tried several times and I regularly end up almost
puking. Not my idea of a pleasurable smoke: I'll have my pipe, thank
you. Furthermore my wife, who loves the aroma of my pipe, finds cigars
unbearable: so that settles it.

Subject: New Subscriber

I am a new subscriber from the Saratoga New York area. I have been an
avid Pipesmoker since early college days in Boston(Ehrlich's Shop) in
the early 60"s. I have approximately 36 Briar Pipes and 6 Meerschaums in
my collection. Over the years I've whittled out the lesser models and
kept only High Grades. Mostly Italians-Caminetto's (Early Models),
Castello's, L'Anatras, Cavicchi, Radice, Ardors, Talamona and Savinelli
Autos. I've been concentrating lately on American Pipes and find them to
be great. I have several by Clarence Mickles, Randy Wiley, Ed Andrew and
American (Kurt Rollar and Mark Tinsky) and Elliot Nachwalter. My tobacco
tastes changed to mostly Virginias with Rattrays Red Rapparee and Black
Mallory being favorites. I am lucky to have two excellent tobacco shops
in the area- Park Lane Tobacconists (Paul Bonaquisti's Shop) and Habana
Premium (Scott Benedet's). I look forward to Pipe Digest postings.

When I first joined the Coterie I was told to send no money, just send a
pipe. So I sent a pipe with a letter.
The pipe was returned to me with a wonderful note welcoming me. He was as
has been mentioned numerous times a class act.

Good to see the Pipe Digest up and active again. Both my Grandfathers
smoked pipes exclusively, my Dad smoked his pipes with an occasional cigar,
and this Old Buck has smoked his pipes for 50 years now.

Over the years I have dabbled in trying to grow tobacco - In early February
of this year I created a Yahoo! user's group for this hobby... It occurred
to me that perhaps some of the members of this group may be interested in
this too. Here is the site:

I'm probably one of the last to hear this sad news.

"He'll be missed" doesn't even begin to describe the loss to our community;
we'll never again see Tom's equal.

Hello all PD readers!

It is sad to notice our beloved PD gradually falling down month after month.

I remember those olden days (some 10 yers ago), when we had posts at
least quadruple times more than today.

By no means I am accusing any one, but this looks like the time has
already gone by thinking about posting lists like this of ours.

Luckily, we have the "alt.smokers.pipes" Newsnet group as well as the

The time delay compared with the above mentioned our beloved Pipe Digest
seems somewhat too big to become excused, if you ask me.

Mellow puffs and dry ashes!

[ The on-line world has certainly changed since the digest was created. At
that time, the Web didn't exist and receiving email was a good thing as
there wasn't much spam. The first digest that I have with a date is #4
from April 1989. With 295 issues, that's about a digest every .7 months.
More than our current once-a-month rate, but there was a lot more traffic.
Anyway, I'll continue to run it until I'm the only subscriber, and end up
talking to myself :) ]

It is with deep sadness that I write these words.
I did not know Tom Dunn too well, but had the honor of being a coterian
for about 8 years now.
I found him to be a very kind person and friendly fellow pipe smoker,
who did a great job assembling the various writings, pictures and other
things, his many scribes were sending him.
I will miss the T.P.S.E and the "news" and kind words from Tom.
It's true: all things must pass, but not all are so sad a thing to pass
like Tom and his Ephemeris.
May he rest in peace and always have a good pipeful at hand.

Michael (from Germany)
